La Santisima Trinidad del Parana (1706) and Jesus de Tavarangue (1685) are the two best-preserved reductions. UNESCO declared them World Heritage Sites in 1993 for their outstanding universal value: monumental plazas, carved-stone temples, workshops, indigenous houses and bell towers still standing today.
The Jesuit Missions: a living legacy
Between the 17th and 18th centuries, missionaries of the Society of Jesus founded in Paraguay a unique system of “reductions” where Jesuits and Guarani peoples lived together. The Jesuit Missions became a true cultural republic organized around faith, music, agriculture, crafts and a remarkable urbanism in red sandstone.
Visiting them means experiencing one of the most important historical legacies of South America.
