Asunción to Iguazu Falls: bus, car or transfer

Three ways to cover the same road, and the cheapest one is not always the cheapest by the end of the day. Here are the real times, what changes at the border and when each option is the right one.

The short answer

There is no direct bus and no scheduled flight from Asunción to the Iguazu Falls. Every option runs along the same road — PY02 to Coronel Oviedo, PY07 to Ciudad del Este, then the Friendship Bridge into Brazil. What changes is how many times you change vehicles, who deals with the border, and what time you reach the park gate.

The three options side by side

Driving times are from the routes we run every week, without long stops. Bus times are the ones we publish on each distance page and already include the changes. Prices are per vehicle, from the August 2026 rates, sedan for up to three passengers.

We do not publish bus fares, airline fares or car hire rates: they belong to third parties, they change, and we do not set them. What can be said safely is the order of magnitude — the bus ticket is by far the cheapest option per person, and it stays that way for two or three travellers.

The practical reading of that table is one line long: on open road, the bus and the car are close. What stretches the bus is not speed, it is the change of vehicle and the fixed timetable. Asunción to Ciudad del Este is 5 h by bus against 4 h 30 min to 5 h by car, essentially a tie. Asunción to Foz do Iguaçu becomes 6 to 8 h because no direct service exists.

The second reading is about how many of you are travelling. A transfer is priced per vehicle: USD 417 to Foz do Iguaçu is the whole car, whether one, two or three people get in. Divided by three, the arithmetic changes shape, and that is exactly where the comparison stops being obvious.

How long the bus really takes

The scheduled bus leaves the Terminal de Ómnibus in Asunción and drops you at the terminal in the destination city. To Ciudad del Este it is around five hours, with several operators running through the day. To Encarnación, around six. Both of those routes stay inside Paraguay and work well: paved end to end and frequent.

The trouble starts when the journey crosses a border. There is no direct bus from Asunción to Foz do Iguaçu. You travel to Ciudad del Este, get off, arrange the Friendship Bridge crossing yourself and pick up onward transport on the Brazilian side. Counting the change and the border, the realistic total is six to eight hours. For Puerto Iguazú, on the Argentinian side, it is two borders and seven to nine hours.

There is also a cost that never appears on the ticket: the two ends. The Asunción terminal is not at your hotel door, and neither is the arrival terminal. That is two taxi or app rides with luggage, which nobody adds up when comparing prices and everybody ends up paying.

And there is the timetable. The bus leaves when the company decided, not when you need to. That is irrelevant on a leisure trip with two days at the destination. It is decisive when your arrival has a time attached: a connecting flight, a meeting, a park gate that closes.

When the bus is the right call, and when it is not

We sell private transfers, and the honest answer is still that the bus wins in several scenarios. It is worth knowing which ones.

What the transfer costs, route by route

Prices are per vehicle, not per passenger, from the August 2026 rates. The sedan takes 1 to 3 passengers with three suitcases, the Hyundai H1 minivan up to 7, and the Mercedes Sprinter covers groups of 8 to 14. With 1 to 3 passengers the sedan price applies even in the minivan.

The Formosa run is sedan only, and that is not a preference: the border permits do not cover our larger vehicles on that route. From the fourth passenger the minivan comes in and each extra passenger adds USD 20.

Notice that the return is never double the one way. Asunción to Ciudad del Este is USD 347 one way and USD 539 return, not USD 694. The reason is simple: with the return booked together the driver is not paid to come back empty, and that saving goes into the price. On long routes, booking both legs together is 15 to 30 per cent cheaper than two separate transfers.

The price covers fuel, tolls, every vehicle cost and the border paperwork. It does not cover park admission, meals or hotels. The full breakdown of each leg, with the towns you pass through, lives on its own page — for example Asunción to Ciudad del Este and Asunción to Puerto Iguazú.

Driving yourself: the road is fine, the border is not

Inside Paraguay, driving is straightforward. What complicates things is taking the vehicle across, and that is where the hire car arithmetic usually falls apart.

• A hire car leaves the country only with written authorisation. The rental company has to issue a document allowing the vehicle out of Paraguay, and not every company issues one. This is settled when you book the car, not on the day you travel, and it is the number one reason plans collapse at the Friendship Bridge.
• Your own vehicle needs papers valid next door. Registration and insurance with cover for Brazil or Argentina, depending on which side you cross.
• The Friendship Bridge queue is unpredictable. It is worst in the middle of the morning and can swallow whatever you saved against a transfer. How the crossing works, with papers and hours, is in our piece on the Brazil–Paraguay border.
• Parking at the other end is your problem. At the falls park, at the Ciudad del Este malls and in central Asunción, parking goes into the budget and into your head.
• The road itself is good. PY02 to Coronel Oviedo and then PY07 to Ciudad del Este are paved end to end, and so is PY01 heading south to Encarnación. Nobody needs a 4×4 for any of these routes.
• Renting makes sense for several days inland. If the plan is a week circling the country and stopping where you feel like it, the hire car is the right answer. For a single long leg with a border in the middle, it almost never is.

How to decide, in five steps

The same sequence we run through when someone messages us on WhatsApp asking which option is worth it.

   Alone or as a pair, the bus almost always wins on price. From three people up, a transfer priced per vehicle competes on level terms, because the price does not rise with the headcount until the third passenger.

   Inside Paraguay, the bus is competitive. With a border in the middle, it loses two to three hours to the change and the formalities, and that is where the comparison is decided.

   Look at the clock at the far end

   If there is a time you have to be there — a flight, a meeting, the park gate that stops admitting visitors at 16:00 — the bus timetable stops being a detail.

   Hotel to terminal and terminal to hotel, with luggage. Those are two rides the ticket does not cover and everybody forgets to add.

The air option, and why it rarely comes up

There is no scheduled commercial flight between Asunción and Foz do Iguaçu, and no Paraguayan domestic network with tourist-friendly frequencies. That is why the plane almost never enters the conversation when someone is weighing bus against car: there is nothing to weigh.

What does exist is the private flight, or air taxi, priced per aircraft rather than per seat. Asunción to Ciudad del Este is 1 h 30 min in a Cessna 172, from USD 1,099 per aircraft with the same-day return included. Encarnación is 1 h 35 min, also from USD 1,099. An aircraft that size carries up to three passengers.

The arithmetic only works in two cases: when the calendar is worth more than the money, and when the distance is long enough that flying saves a hotel night and a full day on the road. The falls, where the choice decides what you see

The Iguazu Falls are the destination where the choice of transport stops being about comfort and starts deciding what you get to see. The Brazilian park opens at 9:00 and stops admitting visitors at 16:00. That single fact governs everything else.

Leaving Asunción by bus in the morning puts you in Ciudad del Este in the early afternoon and at the park gate with an hour or two before it closes. Not impossible, just thin. Doing it properly by bus means travelling the day before and sleeping in Foz or Ciudad del Este, which turns the cheap option into two days plus a hotel night.

By private car or transfer, a 3:00 AM departure puts you at the border around 8:00 and inside the park as it opens, in the best light of the day and ahead of the queues. That is why our day tour leaves at that hour: 17 to 18 hours door to door, at USD 697 per vehicle for up to three passengers. Comparing that with a bus fare is comparing different things — one takes you there and brings you home the same day, the other is one leg.

Park admission is included in none of this and is paid at the gate. In early 2026 it was R$131 for foreign visitors and R$118 for Brazilians and Mercosur citizens, free for children under 6. Paraguay is a Mercosur member. Since it is a third-party price, confirm the current one before you travel.

When hiring us is the wrong call

To get around Asunción during the day travelling light, a ride-hailing app is cheaper and works just as well. There is no sense in paying for a private transfer from Villa Morra to the centre at three in the afternoon.

For a single Asunción to Ciudad del Este leg, travelling alone, without heavy luggage and with no fixed arrival time, the bus does it in five hours for a fraction of the price — and that is exactly what we would tell you on WhatsApp if you asked.

For a week inland, stopping wherever you feel like it, a hire car beats anything we sell, as long as you do not need to take it across a border.

A private transfer earns its price at the airport, before dawn, with luggage, with children, in a group of three or more, on routes with a border in the middle and on any arrival with a time attached. Outside those cases you would be paying for something you do not need, and a customer who overpaid once does not come back.
