The short answer

Laguna Blanca is a natural clear water lake in the Santa Rosa del Aguaray district of San Pedro, and one of the few nature spots in Paraguay that foreign visitors and expats actively look for. You reach it by road from Asunción, there is no direct public transport to the shore, and you always enter through private land. These are the numbers to have before you go.

Where it is Santa Rosa del Aguaray district, San Pedro department, in the Santa Bárbara settlement, about 28 km east of the town
Distance from Asunción About 300 km: 270 km to the Santa Rosa del Aguaray junction and roughly 28 km more on the PY11
Driving time We estimate 4 h 30 min to 5 h 30 min each way, depending on traffic leaving Asunción and on stops
The route PY03 north through Arroyos y Esteros to Santa Rosa del Aguaray, then the PY11 east towards Capitán Bado
The last stretch The PY11 has been paved since 2018. The final access to the shore runs on each property’s own dirt or gravel tracks
Day trip or overnight? A day trip is possible, but it means 9 to 11 hours of driving there and back. One night makes the trip worth it
Without a car A long distance bus to Santa Rosa del Aguaray and an infrequent local bus after that, or a private door to door transfer
Entry The lake is surrounded by private properties and you pay at the one you enter through. Each sets its own fee

What Laguna Blanca is, and why people drive this far

Paraguay is not a country people visit for its beaches, and most of what it has in nature is wetland, river and dry forest. That is exactly why Laguna Blanca draws so many searches: it is a lake of transparent water over pale sand, in the middle of the countryside, and it looks like nothing else within a day’s drive of Asunción.

According to the Wikipedia entry on Laguna Blanca, checked on 24 October 2026, the lake covers 1.47 km², has an average depth of 7 metres and is mostly fed by springs; the calcareous sand on the bottom is what gives it its colour and clarity. Specialists consider it the country’s only natural lake, since most of what Paraguayans call a laguna is really a marsh or an arm of a river.

Around the water is one of the best preserved patches of Cerrado, the tropical savanna that covers much of central Brazil, left in Paraguay. The same source records 283 bird species, and the area is listed as an Important Bird Area under code PY030. A research station run by the organisation Para La Tierra also sits on the shore, hosting interns and volunteers who study the region’s wildlife.

One fact changes how you plan the visit: the lake is ringed by private properties. There is no public park with a state run gate. You enter through one of the establishments on the shore, which charge for entry and provide the beach, shade and facilities. The historic complex, the Rancho Laguna Blanca that many older guides mention, is permanently closed according to the Routard guide. So before you set off you need to know where you are going in.

The route from Asunción, section by section

About 300 km in all, paved except for the final access to the shore. There is no border on the way: this is a domestic trip.

  1. 1

    Leaving Asunción to the north

You head out through Mariano Roque Alonso and Limpio towards Route PY03. This is the slowest part of the whole drive: at rush hour, metropolitan traffic can eat the entire first hour. Leaving before 6 in the morning avoids almost all of it.

  2. 2

    PY03 north

The PY03 passes Emboscada and Arroyos y Esteros and carries on into San Pedro department. It is a two lane road with trucks and small towns along the way, and some guides route you onto the PY08 for the final part before Santa Rosa.

  3. 3

The Santa Rosa del Aguaray junction

270 km from Asunción. This is the last sizeable place on the route: fuel stations, shops and the stop for long distance buses. If you are travelling without a car, this is where the bus ends and the problem begins.

  4. 4

    PY11 east

From Santa Rosa you take the PY11, the Juana María de Lara road, which runs to Capitán Bado. It is about 28 km to the lake area in the Santa Bárbara settlement, a 20 to 30 minute drive.

  5. 5

    Down to the shore

From the PY11 you turn onto the internal tracks of the property you have chosen. They are dirt or gravel, and their length and condition vary from one property to the next. After recent rain this is the only section that needs care.

Sources disagree on the total distance: Wikipedia gives 270 km to the Santa Rosa junction plus 27 or 28 km east, while other guides say 250 or 280 km. We work with about 300 km door to door from central Asunción, which is what the sections add up to. For time, we estimate 4 h 30 min to 5 h 30 min each way: that is our own estimate for this distance and these roads, not a route from our fixed rate card.

The dirt road: what old guides say and what has changed

Look up Laguna Blanca online and you will read that the last 27 km are a stone road that an ordinary car can only manage in dry weather, and that you need a high clearance vehicle. That was true, but it is out of date. The PY11 between Santa Rosa del Aguaray and Capitán Bado has been paved: according to the official news agency IP Paraguay, paving of the main road was completed on 2 November 2017, and according to the newspaper ABC Color the road was opened on 19 July 2018.

That does not mean the whole journey is smooth tarmac. The Paraguayan press later reported sections of the PY11 damaged by erosion of the shoulder and road surface, and potholes around Santa Rosa. It is a rural road with rural road maintenance: fine by day with attention, slower going after dark.

What is still dirt is the final access from the road down to the beach. Each shore establishment has its own internal track, and there is no single figure that applies to all of them: some are short and well kept, others less so. The sensible thing is to ask the place you are entering through how the track is that week, especially if it has rained.

In an ordinary car in dry weather the trip is entirely doable. If there has been heavy rain in the days before, the issue is not the PY11 but those last stretches of wet dirt, and that is where a slightly higher vehicle, or a driver who knows the way, makes the difference.

Day trip or overnight: how the hours work out

At about 300 km each way, the clock decides. These figures use our estimate of 4 h 30 min to 5 h 30 min per leg.

Plan Leave Asunción Hours on the road Time at the lake Who it suits
There and back in a day 5 am 9 to 11 hours in total 5 to 6 hours, mid morning to mid afternoon Someone with a single free day who does not mind driving back after dark
One night Early on day one 4 h 30 min to 5 h 30 min each day The afternoon of day one and the morning of day two Most people: the lake in late and early light, with no rush
Two nights or more Whenever you like The same, spread out A full day in between Anyone who wants to walk, birdwatch or simply rest

The day trip is the most requested plan and the one we least recommend. Leave at 5 and most people reach the lake around 10; to be back in Asunción before 9 pm you need to leave the shore at 4. That is more than 16 hours away for 6 hours at the lake.

There is another factor in the day trip that few people think about: the driver. A 16 or 17 hour job goes beyond the legal driving day, and doing it safely means a second driver. This is not red tape: the night drive back down the PY03 after a day in the sun is exactly when you do not want a tired person at the wheel.

With one night the maths changes. You leave early, arrive before noon, spend the afternoon at the lake, sleep in the area and head back the next day after lunch. Same distance, split over two days, and you get the lake at the quietest hours with the best light. Where to stay is something you arrange with the establishment: we do not recommend accommodation we cannot vouch for.

Getting there without a car

There is no direct transport from Asunción to the lake shore. These are the real options, with what each has going for and against it.

Option How it works For Against
Long distance bus plus local bus A bus from Asunción towards San Pedro or Pedro Juan Caballero as far as Santa Rosa del Aguaray, then the local bus to Santa Bárbara along the PY11 The cheapest option The local bus is infrequent and drops you on the road, not at the beach. With luggage and no fixed timetable, the day can disappear in waiting
Long distance bus plus a local car A bus to Santa Rosa del Aguaray and then a car hired in town for the last 28 km Covers the part the bus does not It needs arranging in advance, and so does the return, which is where it tends to fall apart
Rental car You drive yourself from Asunción, about 300 km Complete freedom over timing Five hours of rural road each way, and the final dirt track is your problem
Private door to door transfer We pick you up at your hotel or home, drop you at the establishment and the return is already arranged No changes, guaranteed ride back The most expensive option if you travel alone

We do not publish bus or local car fares because we do not set them and they change. Long distance bus times can be checked at the Asunción bus terminal.

For a solo traveller with time to spare, the bus works, as long as you accept that the last stretch is the uncertain part. For a group, a family, or anyone who does not speak Spanish or Guaraní, that last stretch is precisely the reason to sort the whole thing out in one go with long distance transfers, which cover custom routes on request as well as the fixed ones.

When to call us, and when not to

Laguna Blanca is not one of the five tours in our catalogue. We run it as a custom route, with a fixed quote agreed before you leave. Here is when that makes sense.

It makes sense if

  • There are three or more of you: the price is per vehicle, not per person, in a sedan for up to 3, a Hyundai H1 minivan for up to 7 or a Mercedes Sprinter for 8 to 14.
  • You want to do it as a day trip: with a second driver the long day is done safely, and you can sleep on the way back.
  • You flew into Asunción, have no car and do not want to drive five hours on roads you do not know, in a country where few signs are in English.
  • You want to stay a night and have the return fixed in advance, without relying on the local bus.
  • It has rained during the week and you would rather someone who knows the track handled the dirt access.

It does not if

  • You have your own car, the roads are fine and the weather is dry: the drive is long but has no particular difficulty.
  • You are travelling alone on a tight budget: the long distance bus to Santa Rosa del Aguaray costs a fraction, even with the uncertain last stretch.
  • You want to stay several days and explore the area at your own pace: a rental car will serve you better than one transfer out and one back.
  • You are after a naturalist guide to explain the Cerrado and its birds: that is not our driver, it is what local researchers and guides offer.
  • You want us to book your accommodation or entry: that is arranged directly with the establishment on the shore.

If you would rather do a day out with less driving, the ones with a fixed price are on our tours page, all private and all priced per vehicle.

A driver for the whole day: how it works and what it costs

There are two ways to do the trip with us. The first is one transfer out and another back on different dates: we drop you at the lake, the vehicle returns to Asunción and we collect you on the agreed day. That is the best option if you are staying one or two nights.

The second is a driver at your disposal who waits at the lake and brings you back. Our private driver in Asunción service is USD 197 for up to 8 hours within Greater Asunción, but Laguna Blanca is outside that area: kilometres beyond the metropolitan area are quoted separately, and a day trip runs well past 8 hours. When a job exceeds the legal driving day, a second driver is added at USD 90 per day.

That is why we do not give a list price for Laguna Blanca: it depends on day trip or overnight, on the vehicle and on how many hours the car waits. What we do guarantee is a fixed quote per vehicle, with fuel, tolls and driver included, sent to you before you confirm anything. We quote in US dollars and also accept guaraníes, Brazilian reais and Argentine pesos. Entry to the establishment, food and accommodation are not included: you pay those on site.

48 hours’ notice is comfortable. In the summer high season, when the lake gets busier, more notice helps.

When to go and what to know at the shore

The lake receives visitors all year, and summer (December to February in Paraguay) is the busiest season because swimming is the main draw. For walking, birdwatching and driving without the fierce heat, the Routard guide recommends spring, September and October. In winter the water is cold for swimming, but the scenery and the drive are more pleasant.

Piranhas are among the fish in the lake, according to the Wikipedia entry. That is no reason to stay out of the water, but it is a reason to stick to each beach’s designated swimming areas and follow the instructions on site.

Because the lake is on private land, each establishment sets its own rules: opening hours, whether you can camp, whether you can bring food or pets. Ask beforehand, together with the condition of the access track.

For the drive itself: leave Asunción with a full tank or fill up in Santa Rosa del Aguaray, carry cash in guaraníes because not everywhere in the area takes cards, and expect weak mobile signal at the shore. If you are arranging a pick up with anyone, settle the details before you arrive.

What is not our data, and how to check it

The distances, the location and the features of the lake come from the Wikipedia entry, ABC Color, IP Paraguay, Última Hora and the Routard guide, all checked on 24 October 2026. They do not agree on everything: the total distance from Asunción ranges from 250 to 300 km depending on the source, and several guides still describe as a stone track a section that is now the paved PY11.

We do not publish entry fees, opening hours or the facilities of each shore establishment because each property sets its own and they change. Check directly with the place you plan to enter through. Bus times can be checked at the Asunción bus terminal.

What is ours is the journey: the vehicle, the driver, the departure time and the arranged return, at a fixed price per vehicle agreed before you leave.

Frequently asked questions

What people actually ask us on WhatsApp before going to Laguna Blanca.

Where is Laguna Blanca?

In the Santa Rosa del Aguaray district of San Pedro department, in the Santa Bárbara settlement, about 28 km east of the town along Route PY11, the road to Capitán Bado. It is in north central Paraguay, not near Asunción.

How far is Laguna Blanca from Asunción?

About 300 km: 270 km to the Santa Rosa del Aguaray junction, according to the Wikipedia entry checked on 24 October 2026, and roughly 28 km more to the east. Other guides give 250 to 280 km because they measure to different points.

How long does it take to get there from Asunción?

We estimate 4 h 30 min to 5 h 30 min by car each way, depending on traffic leaving Asunción and on stops. That is our own estimate, not a route from our fixed rate card.

Which road do you take?

The PY03 north, through Emboscada and Arroyos y Esteros, to Santa Rosa del Aguaray. Some guides route onto the PY08 for the final part. At Santa Rosa you take the PY11 east towards Capitán Bado.

Is the road to Laguna Blanca unpaved?

Mostly not any more. The PY11 between Santa Rosa del Aguaray and Capitán Bado was paved in 2017 and 2018. What is still dirt or gravel is the final access from the road to the shore, which depends on each establishment.

Can I go in an ordinary car?

In dry weather, yes. If there has been heavy rain in the days before, the only tricky part is the dirt track down to the beach, so ask the establishment how it is before you set off.

Is there a direct bus from Asunción to Laguna Blanca?

Not to the shore. Buses from Asunción to San Pedro or Pedro Juan Caballero stop at Santa Rosa del Aguaray, and from there an infrequent local bus runs towards Santa Bárbara and drops you on the road. Times can be checked at the Asunción bus terminal.

Is a day trip worth it?

It is possible, but it means 9 to 11 hours of driving and more than 16 hours away for around 6 hours at the lake. With one night it is far more enjoyable, with the same distance split over two days.

How much is the entry fee?

The lake is surrounded by private properties and each shore establishment charges its own entry. We do not publish the amount because each sets its own and it changes: check directly with the place you plan to enter through.

How much does a transfer with you cost?

It is quoted case by case, because Laguna Blanca is not a route on our fixed rate card. It depends on day trip or overnight, on the vehicle and on how long the car waits. The quote is fixed and per vehicle, with fuel, tolls and driver included.

Do you run a Laguna Blanca tour?

Not as a catalogue tour. Our five tours from Asunción are Iguazu Falls in one or two days, the Asunción city tour, the panoramic flight and the Jesuit Missions. We do Laguna Blanca as a custom transfer, without a guide.

Will the driver wait while we are at the lake?

Yes, if you book it that way. On a day trip the job exceeds the legal driving day, so a second driver is added at USD 90 per day. If you are staying overnight, one transfer out and another back is usually better value.

Are there piranhas in Laguna Blanca?

Piranhas are among the fish recorded in the lake, according to the Wikipedia entry. Swim in each beach’s designated areas and follow the instructions on site.

What is the best time of year to go?

For swimming, the summer months, which are also the busiest. For walking and birdwatching, the Routard guide recommends spring, September and October. The lake receives visitors all year.

The last stretch is what decides the trip

The 270 km to Santa Rosa del Aguaray are an ordinary road, and the PY11 is paved. What makes Laguna Blanca complicated is what comes after: no bus to the shore, a dirt access track and entry through private land. If you have a car and the weather is dry, go on your own. If not, tell us the date and how many of you there are, and we will sort it out door to door.

The location, the distance to Santa Rosa del Aguaray and the features of the lake come from Wikipedia; the Santa Bárbara settlement and the PY11 access from ABC Color; the paving of the PY11 from IP Paraguay and ABC Color; the closure of Rancho Laguna Blanca and the recommended season from the Routard guide. All checked on 24 October 2026. None of this is our data and it may change. Driving time is our own estimate. Our prices are in US dollars, from our August 2026 rate card.
