How to Get to the Iguazu Falls from Asunción
There is no direct bus and no direct flight. Four realistic options, with what each one actually costs in money and hours.
The short answer
330 km, and No Direct Connection
Every option involves the same road and the same border. What changes is who drives and how many transfers you make.
The Iguazu Falls are about 330 km east of Asunción. The route runs along Route 7 to Ciudad del Este, crosses the Friendship Bridge into Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil, and continues a short distance to the park gate.
Two facts shape every decision here. There is no direct bus from Asunción to Foz do Iguaçu — you change at Ciudad del Este. And no option drops you at the park entrance except a private vehicle; everything else leaves you in a city and you arrange the last leg yourself.
The other constraint is the clock. The Brazilian park opens at 9 AM and closes its gates at 4 PM. Arriving mid-afternoon means seeing a fraction of it, which is why departure time matters more than the method you pick.
The four ways
What Each Option Really Costs
Time is one-way unless noted. The last column is whether you can realistically do it and be back the same day.
| Option | Time | Where it leaves you | Cost | Same day? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer or day tour | 5–6 h each way | Your hotel to the park gate | From USD 417 one way · USD 697 round trip same day | Yes |
| Long-distance bus | 6–8 h with the change | Terminal to terminal | Cheapest option by far | No |
| Driving yourself | 5–6 h each way | Wherever you park | Fuel, tolls and a border permit | Depends |
| Private flight plus transfer | About 1 h flying | Airport to the park | From USD 1,099 to Ciudad del Este | Yes |
Option 1
Private Transfer or Day Tour
The only option that goes hotel to park gate without you arranging anything else.
A private vehicle leaves when you decide, which in practice means 3 AM if you want the park at opening. It crosses the border with you, waits while you visit, and brings you back. No terminals, no timetable, no last leg to solve.
| Service | Vehicle | Price |
|---|---|---|
| One way to Foz do Iguaçu | Sedan, 1–3 pax | USD 417 |
| One way to Foz do Iguaçu | Minivan, up to 7 | USD 497 |
| Round trip, same day | Sedan, 1–3 pax | USD 697 |
| Full day tour with waiting | Sedan or minivan, 1–3 pax | USD 697 |
The day tour is the round trip with the driver waiting at the park all day, which is why it costs less than a return transfer booked as two legs. If you are staying the night in Foz, the one-way transfer is the one you want.
Option 2
The Long-Distance Bus
The cheapest way there, and the one that most often ends in a wasted day.
There is no direct service. You take a bus from the Terminal de Ómnibus de Asunción to the Terminal de Ómnibus de Ciudad del Este — around five hours, with several operators running through the day — and then arrange the crossing to Foz do Iguaçu and the ride out to the park yourself. Counting the change and the border, the realistic total is six to eight hours.
The problem is not the price, it is the arithmetic. A bus leaving Asunción in the morning puts you in Ciudad del Este in the early afternoon and at the park gate with an hour or two before it closes. Doing it properly means travelling the day before and sleeping in Foz or Ciudad del Este, which turns the cheap option into two days plus a hotel.
It works well if you are already planning to stay in the area. It works badly as a day trip.
Option 3
Driving Yourself
Fine on the Paraguayan side. The complication is the border.
Route 7 is a good road and the drive is straightforward. The difficulty is that taking a vehicle across an international border needs paperwork: a rental car requires written authorisation from the rental company to leave Paraguay, and not every company grants it. Your own vehicle needs its registration and insurance valid for Brazil.
Add the queue at the Friendship Bridge, which is unpredictable and worst in the middle of the morning, plus parking at the park, and the saving over a private transfer narrows for two or three people. For a family with a rental already booked it can make sense; as a plan in itself it rarely does.
Option 4
Private Flight
About an hour in the air instead of six on the road.
There is no scheduled commercial flight between Asunción and Foz do Iguaçu, but a private flight or air taxi does the trip in roughly an hour. Our reference price to Ciudad del Este is USD 1,099 for the aircraft, and from there the park is a short transfer across the bridge — USD 107 by sedan. Direct flights into Foz do Iguaçu are quoted on request.
It is the option that makes sense when the constraint is time rather than budget: a same-day visit with hours to spare instead of a 3 AM start. See our private flights in Paraguay for the full fleet.
The border
Crossing at the Friendship Bridge
The same for every option, and the part people underestimate.
| Where | Friendship Bridge, between Ciudad del Este and Foz do Iguaçu |
| Documents | Valid passport. Children need their own documentation |
| Visa | Required for Brazil depending on nationality — confirm before you travel |
| Best time to cross | Early morning. Queues build from mid-morning and are worst at weekends |
| With a private vehicle | Included in the price, with the vehicle and driver paperwork |
| Park entrance | R$131 foreign visitors, R$118 Brazil and Mercosur (early 2026), paid at the gate |
Paraguay is a Mercosur member, so Paraguayan passport holders pay the lower rate. The route itself is broken down in our Asunción–Foz do Iguaçu distance guide.
Choosing
Which One Fits You
Three situations that cover most people asking this question.
- One day
Private day tour
It is the only option that gets you to the gate at opening and back to Asunción the same night. Anything else means arriving late or staying over.
- Two days
One-way transfer, night in Foz
Cheaper per day, it leaves the second day free, and we collect you whenever you are ready to come back.
- On a budget
Bus, with a night there
Genuinely the cheapest, as long as you accept it is a two-day plan and budget for the hotel and the local rides at each end.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
The questions people ask before booking this trip.
How do you get from Asunción to the Iguazu Falls?
By road, about 330 km east along Route 7 to Ciudad del Este, then across the Friendship Bridge into Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil. A private vehicle does it in five to six hours each way including the border. By bus it is six to eight hours because there is no direct service and you change at Ciudad del Este. There is no scheduled commercial flight between the two cities.
Is there a direct bus from Asunción to Foz do Iguaçu?
No. You take a bus from the Terminal de Ómnibus de Asunción to the Terminal de Ómnibus de Ciudad del Este, around five hours with several operators running through the day, and then arrange the crossing to Foz do Iguaçu and the ride to the park yourself. Counting the change and the border, six to eight hours is realistic.
How long does it take to get from Asunción to the Iguazu Falls?
Five to six hours each way in a private vehicle, including the border crossing. Six to eight hours by bus with the change at Ciudad del Este. About an hour by private flight, plus a short transfer from the airport to the park.
Can you visit the Iguazu Falls in one day from Asunción?
Yes, but only with a private vehicle. Leaving Asunción at 3 AM puts you at the Brazilian park when it opens at 9 AM, with the whole morning to visit and a return to Asunción the same night. By bus the timings do not work for a day trip — you would arrive with an hour or two before the gates close.
How much does it cost to get to the Iguazu Falls from Asunción?
A one-way private transfer to Foz do Iguaçu is from USD 417 for one to three passengers in a sedan, or USD 497 in a minivan for up to seven. The full day tour with the driver waiting at the park is USD 697. The bus is far cheaper but leaves you at a terminal rather than the park. A private flight to Ciudad del Este is from USD 1,099 for the aircraft.
What documents do I need?
A valid passport, plus documentation for any children travelling with you. Some nationalities also need a visa for Brazil, which is worth confirming before you travel rather than at the bridge. If you are driving a rental car you also need written authorisation from the rental company to take it out of Paraguay.
Can I drive a rental car across the border?
Only if the rental company authorises it in writing, and not all of them do. Ask before you book the car, not when you collect it. Your own vehicle needs its registration and insurance valid for Brazil.
What time should I leave Asunción?
Around 3 AM if you want to be at the park for the 9 AM opening. That also puts you at the Friendship Bridge before the queues build, which is the single biggest variable in the journey. Leaving after sunrise usually means arriving in the afternoon with a fraction of the park still open.
Is the Friendship Bridge crossing complicated?
The procedure is simple; the queue is what varies. Early morning crossings are usually quick, while mid-morning and weekends can add an hour or more. With a private transfer the vehicle and driver paperwork is already in order and included in the price.
Do I need to pay to enter the park?
Yes, and it is separate from any transport cost. As of early 2026 Iguaçu National Park charges R$131 for foreign visitors and R$118 for Brazilian and Mercosur nationals, with free entry under six. Paraguay is a Mercosur member, so Paraguayan passport holders pay the lower rate. It is paid at the gate in reais or by card.
Is it better to stay overnight in Foz do Iguaçu?
If you want the Argentinian side as well, that side needs a full day of its own and cannot be combined with the Brazilian one in a single trip from Asunción. We do not run tours there, so it would be on your own. If you only want the Brazilian side, the day trip works and saves you a hotel.
Can you fly from Asunción to Foz do Iguaçu?
Not on a scheduled commercial flight. A private flight or air taxi does it in about an hour. Our reference price to Ciudad del Este is USD 1,099 for the aircraft, and the park is a short transfer from there; direct flights into Foz do Iguaçu are quoted on request.
