Are There Waterfalls in Paraguay? The Honest Answer
No, the Iguazu Falls are not in Paraguay, and no amount of searching will move them. Here is what Paraguay actually has, what the falls cost you in hours and dollars from Asunción, and when you should not book us at all.
The short answer
The Iguazu Falls sit on the border between Brazil and Argentina. Paraguay has no share of them, which is why every honest answer to this question involves crossing a border. Ciudad del Este is the closest you get without leaving the country, and from there the falls are about an hour away. These are the numbers that decide the trip.

Why There Are No Iguazu Falls in Paraguay
The Iguazu Falls sit on the Iguazu river, which forms the border between Brazil and Argentina. Paraguay is the neighbour, not a party to it. Roughly 20% of the 275 individual falls are on the Brazilian side and about 80% on the Argentinian side, and none of them are Paraguayan. Both national parks are UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Argentina since 1984, Brazil since 1986.
What causes the confusion is the map. Ciudad del Este, Paraguay’s second city, is around 20 km from Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil, and the two are joined by the Friendship Bridge. From a Paraguayan hotel the falls are roughly an hour away. But they are an hour away in another country, and getting there means an international border, a valid passport and, depending on your nationality, a Brazilian visa.
So the search has two honest answers. If you meant the Iguazu Falls, you are going to Brazil or to Argentina, and the only question left is how. If you meant a waterfall that is genuinely inside Paraguay, there is one worth the detour — and it is not the same thing at all.
The Monday Falls: What Paraguay Does Have
The closest thing Paraguay has is the Salto del Monday, at Presidente Franco, a few minutes from Ciudad del Este. It is a genuine waterfall in a park you can walk in about an hour, and it photographs well. It is also, said plainly, another scale entirely: nobody who has stood in front of the Iguazu amphitheatre would mistake one for the other.
Where it earns its place is inside a morning. The Monday Falls and the Itaipú dam are both on the Ciudad del Este side of the border, and the two fit comfortably into one morning before lunch. The Itaipú technical visit, the one that goes into the machine hall, is booked in advance and leaves from Ciudad del Este.
If your trip is already taking you east — for the shopping, for business, or on the way to Brazil — this is the version of “waterfalls in Paraguay” that is actually in Paraguay. The road from the capital is 327 km of Routes PY02 and PY07, four and a half to five hours, and no border at all. A one-way private transfer from Asunción to Ciudad del Este is from USD 347 in a sedan for one to three passengers, or USD 397 in a minivan for up to seven.
Treat it as a stop, not a substitute. Booking a trip to Paraguay expecting the Iguazu Falls and finding the Monday Falls is a disappointment we would rather you never have.

There is no direct bus between Asunción and Foz do Iguaçu — you change at Ciudad del Este — and no scheduled commercial flight between the two cities. From the Ciudad del Este airport the last leg across the bridge is a short transfer, USD 107 by sedan. The Day Tour, Hour by Hour
The whole schedule is built backwards from one fact: the Brazilian park opens at 9:00 AM and the first two hours are the best of the day.

When to Book Us, and When Not To
The second column is the one worth reading. We would rather lose a booking than sell you a bad day.
Book the tour when
- You have one day and you want the falls at opening, not an hour before the gates close.
- You are travelling with children, with luggage, or with anyone for whom a terminal change at Ciudad del Este is a real obstacle.
- You want the border handled with the vehicle and driver paperwork already in order.
- You are two or three people, where the cost per head lands close to the bus once you add the hotel that the bus timings force on you.
Do not book it when
- You are on a tight budget and have two days. The bus with a night in Ciudad del Este or Foz is genuinely cheaper, and we will tell you so.
- You are already staying in Foz do Iguaçu or Puerto Iguazú. From there the park is a local ride, not a tour from Paraguay.
- You want the Argentinian side. We do not run tours there. We take you one way to Foz do Iguaçu and collect you when you are done.
- You want both sides in one day from Asunción. It cannot be done well: you would spend the daylight at border posts and see half of each park.

The park entrance is never included in a tour price, on either side, and it is paid at the gate in local currency or by card. Entry requirements change and they are not ours to fix: check the current rules with the Brazilian consulate or your own foreign ministry before you book flights, rather than trusting a figure on a blog.

If you have one day, go to the Brazilian side and you will not feel short-changed: it is the view everyone pictures. If you have two, do both and start with Brazil, because doing it the other way round makes the panorama feel like a summary of something you already saw. If You Searched for Waterfalls in Paraguay
Here is the summary, so nobody books a flight on a misunderstanding. Paraguay has no share of the Iguazu Falls. It has the Monday Falls, which is a nice hour near Ciudad del Este and not a reason to cross a continent. And it has the best road access on the Paraguayan side of a border that is 20 km from one of the great waterfalls on earth.
That last point is the one that matters commercially, and it is why this page exists. If you are in Asunción, the falls are a long day away and entirely doable. If you are in Ciudad del Este, they are an hour away. If you are planning a trip to South America and the falls are the reason, fly into Foz do Iguaçu or Puerto Iguazú and skip the drive altogether — we will not pretend otherwise to sell a transfer.

Is there a direct bus from Asunción to the falls?
No. You take a bus from the Terminal de Ómnibus de Asunción to the terminal at Ciudad del Este, around five hours, and then arrange the crossing to Foz do Iguaçu and the ride to the park yourself. Counting the change and the border, six to eight hours is realistic, which turns it into a two-day plan with a hotel.
Which side of the falls should I visit from Paraguay?
The Brazilian side. It takes three to four hours on one paved trail of roughly 1.5 km, it gives you the panoramic view of the whole set, and it is the only side that works as a day trip from Asunción. The Argentinian side holds about 80% of the falls and needs a full day, so from Paraguay it means an overnight stay.
Can I visit both sides in one day from Asunción?
