Itaipu dam: how to visit it from Paraguay
Itaipu sits on the border, and it has two separate visitor complexes, one in Paraguay, one in Brazil. They are not the same visit. On the Paraguayan side entry is free with ID and, for some attractions, a prior booking.
The short answer
Itaipu is a binational dam on the Paraná river, run jointly by Paraguay and Brazil, and that has a very practical consequence: there is no single ticket. There are two visitor operations with their own hours, their own rules and their own price, and one of them has no price at all. Which one you use is decided by which side of the bridge you are standing on.
| Paraguayan side | Free. Itaipu states that access to any of the sites in the Tourist Complex is free of charge; you need ID, and a passport if you are a foreign visitor |
| Brazilian side | From R$ 48.00 to R$ 185.00 per person depending on the tour, according to the official Brazilian site |
| Where each entrance is | The Brazilian one in Foz do Iguaçu. The Paraguayan one at the Visitor Reception Centre in Hernandarias, next to Ciudad del Este |
| Going inside the plant | On the Paraguayan side, the Hydroelectric Plant visit, hourly from 08:00 to 16:00. On the Brazilian side, the Itaipu Especial tour, about 2 h 30, R$ 185.00 |
| The quickest option | The Brazilian Itaipu Panorâmica: about 1 h 10, R$ 63.00, every day from 8:30 to 16:00 |
| Booking | Required on the Paraguayan side for some attractions, and by the Thursday of that week for the Monumental Illumination. Several Brazilian tours have limited places |
| ID | Mandatory on both sides. Itaipu is explicit about it: identity document or passport, or a passenger list for groups |
| From Asunción | 327 km to Ciudad del Este on route PY02 then PY07, 4 h 30 min to 5 h by private vehicle, with no border crossing |
One dam, two visitor operations
Most people arrive at this question expecting a single number: how much is a ticket to Itaipu. There is no single number, and the gap is not trivial. On one side of the river you pay per person. On the other you pay nothing at all.
The dam sits on the Paraná river, on the border between Paraguay and Brazil, and it is administered jointly by the two countries. According to Itaipu’s own official site it has a capacity of around 14,000 MW and supplies 8.7% of the electricity consumed in Brazil and 86.4% of the electricity consumed in Paraguay. That second figure explains a great deal about how each country treats the visit.
On the Brazilian side, in Foz do Iguaçu, the visit is a commercial tourism operation: a catalogue of tours with set durations and prices, online ticketing, and the infrastructure to receive coach groups. On the Paraguayan side, on the right bank, the complex is treated as public heritage. Entry is free, and what stands in the place of a price is paperwork, mandatory ID and, for some attractions, a booking you have to collect in person.
Neither is the better visit. They are different visits, and for almost everyone the decision is settled by logistics rather than content. This guide is written from the Paraguayan side, because that is where our vehicles are, but the Brazilian figures are here too, with their source, because anyone staying in Foz decides by comparing the two.
Paraguayan side: what is open and when
Hours from the official PDF “Horarios de visitas Complejo Turístico Itaipu Margen Derecha”, published by Itaipu Binacional at itaipu.gov.py and checked on 28 September 2026. Everything starts at the Visitor Reception Centre in Hernandarias.
| Attraction | Days | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Hydroelectric Plant | Monday to Sunday | Departures at 08:00, 09:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00 |
| Monumental Illumination | Fridays and Saturdays | Check-in at 19:30 on the summer schedule and 18:30 on the winter schedule |
| Tierra Guaraní Museum | Tuesday to Sunday | 08:00 to 17:00 |
| CIASI wildlife research centre | Tuesday to Sunday | 08:00 to 11:00 and 14:00 to 16:00, with guided tours every hour |
| Scale Model of the Dam | Tuesday to Sunday | 08:30 to 11:30 and 13:30 to 16:30, with guided tours every hour |
| Tati Yupi Biological Refuge | Tuesday to Sunday | 08:30 to 16:30 |
The Hydroelectric Plant visit includes a film screening and entry into the plant itself, and ID is not optional: Itaipu requires “la presentación del documento de identidad /pasaporte o lista en casos de grupos”, an identity document or passport, or a list in the case of groups. The Monumental Illumination is the only one with a hard deadline: it must be booked by the Thursday of that week.
On cost, Itaipu is unambiguous on its own site: “El acceso a cualquiera de los sitios del Complejo es gratuito, solo es necesario contar con el documento de identidad, y pasaporte en caso de los extranjeros”, access to any of the complex sites is free, and all you need is an identity document, or a passport for foreign visitors. There is no ticket and no booking fee.
Two attractions carry an extra requirement that changes how you plan the day. For the Scale Model and the Tati Yupi Refuge you have to book and then collect the authorisation in person at the Visitor Reception Centre in Hernandarias, presenting documents and a passenger list, and Itaipu specifies that “las visitas se realizan en el vehículo particular de cada visitante”, meaning those two are done in the visitor’s own vehicle rather than on an Itaipu bus.
Bookings and queries on +595 61 5998040 and 5998094, or by email to cturistico@itaipu.gov.py. Note that this is an office-hours operation, not a 24-hour booking website.
Brazilian side: the tours and what they cost
Full adult ticket prices per person, from the official site turismoitaipu.com.br, checked on 28 September 2026. The page itself sums up the range: tickets run from R$ 48.00 to R$ 185.00 per person.
| Tour | Duration | Full ticket | Days and times |
|---|---|---|---|
| Itaipu Panorâmica | about 1 h 10 | R$ 63.00 | Every day, 8:30 to 16:00 |
| Itaipu Especial | about 2 h 30 | R$ 185.00 | Every day, limited places and times |
| Itaipu Refúgio Biológico | about 2 h 30 | R$ 48.00 | Wednesday to Monday, limited places and times |
| Itaipu Iluminada | about 2 h 00 | R$ 50.00 | Fridays and Saturdays at 19:00 |
| Itaipu Iluminada Especial | about 4 h 00 | R$ 180.00 | Fridays and Saturdays at 19:00 |
| Itaipu by Bike | about 1 h 10 | On request | In a cycling group, subject to schedule |
Panorâmica is an external route with an audio guide and tourism monitors. Especial is the only tour that goes inside, with stops at the heart of the plant and the Central Control Room. The Bela Vista Biological Refuge includes planting a native tree and an easy walk of about 2 km. Itaipu by Bike passes the Central and Spillway viewpoints and reaches the top of the dam, 225 m above sea level. Commercial service runs Monday to Friday 8:00 to 17:00 and weekends 8:00 to 16:20.
Read the two tables side by side and the real difference is not the money, it is how you buy. The Brazilian side sells interior access as a separate, more expensive product you can book online at any hour. The Paraguayan side lets you inside the plant for nothing, but only through a phone call or an email during office hours, and only with your document in hand.
Which side you should use
This is a logistics decision, not a quality one. What actually settles it is where you are starting from and how much time you have.
Use the Paraguayan side if
- You are in Asunción, Ciudad del Este or Hernandarias: the entrance is already on your side of the bridge, with no border queue in the middle of your day.
- You would rather not pay an entrance fee and you have your passport with you.
- You are going on a Monday. The Hydroelectric Plant visit is the only attraction on either side that runs Monday to Sunday, hourly.
- You are travelling by car or private transfer and want to add the Tati Yupi Refuge or the Scale Model, both of which are done in your own vehicle.
- You were already heading to Ciudad del Este, see the Ciudad del Este guideand want to add the dam to the same day.
Use the Brazilian side if
- You are staying in Foz do Iguaçu and do not want to cross the Friendship Bridge just for this.
- You specifically want the Central Control Room: that is the Itaipu Especial tour, and there is no bookable equivalent on the other side.
- You want the evening tour with live music, or the version with dinner at the Mirante do Lago restaurant.
- You would rather buy a ticket online with a fixed time slot than arrange a booking by phone or email in Spanish.
- You are doing the Iguazu Falls on the same trip and want everything on the Brazilian side.
One piece of advice you will not get from a tour desk: if you have a single day and you are based in Foz, do not try to do both sides. The Friendship Bridge consumes an unpredictable amount of time, and you will lose in queueing what you hoped to gain in views. Pick one side and do it properly.
Getting there from Asunción, step by step
It is 327 km to Ciudad del Este on route PY02 as far as Coronel Oviedo and then the PY07. By private vehicle that is 4 h 30 min to 5 h, with no border crossing on the way.
- 1
Pick the day around the attraction
The Hydroelectric Plant runs Monday to Sunday, but the Museum, CIASI, the Scale Model and Tati Yupi are Tuesday to Sunday. If your plan includes more than one of them, Monday is the worst day to go.
- 2
Book whatever needs booking
Call +595 61 5998040 or 5998094, or email cturistico@itaipu.gov.py. If the Monumental Illumination is the plan, the booking has to be in place by the Thursday of that week.
- 3
Leave Asunción early
With 4 h 30 min to 5 h on the road, a 6 a.m. departure puts you in Hernandarias before midday with several plant departures still available. Leaving at midday turns the visit into a scramble.
- 4
Go to the Visitor Reception Centre first
It is in Hernandarias. This is where documents are presented and where the authorisation for the attractions that require one is collected, together with the passenger list if you are a group.
- 5
Do the plant visit
Departures every hour from 08:00 to 16:00. It includes the film and entry into the plant. Keep your passport on you throughout.
- 6
Head back the same day, or stay over
The return run from Asunción in one day is possible, but it is 9 to 10 hours of driving in total. If the plan also includes shopping or the Monumental Illumination on a Friday or Saturday, staying the night in the area is the sensible call.
If you are coming from Foz do Iguaçu instead, the logistics are far shorter: about 20 km between Ciudad del Este and Foz do Iguaçu, taking 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the border queue. How the crossing works is covered in the Paraguay–Brazil border and the Friendship Bridge.
What the transport costs with us
Prices from our August 2026 tariff, per vehicle and not per passenger, with fuel, tolls and driver included. These are not entrance tickets: this is the transport.
| Route | Distance and time | Sedan, 1 to 3 | Minivan, up to 7 | Sprinter, 8 to 14 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asunción – Ciudad del Este | 327 km, 4 h 30 min to 5 h | USD 347 one way · USD 539 return | USD 397 · USD 672 | USD 858 |
| Asunción – Foz do Iguaçu | 340 km, 5 to 6 h with the border | USD 417 one way · USD 707 return | USD 497 · USD 847 | USD 892 |
| Ciudad del Este – Foz do Iguaçu | about 20 km, 30 min to 1 h | On request | On request | On request |
| Private flight Asunción – Ciudad del Este | 1 h 30 min in a Cessna 172 | From USD 1,099 for the aircraft, up to 3 passengers |
The sedan takes 1 to 3 passengers, the Hyundai H1 minivan up to 7 and the Mercedes Sprinter 8 to 14. We quote in US dollars and also accept guaraníes, Brazilian reais and Argentine pesos. The Ciudad del Este – Foz do Iguaçu leg and a driver at your disposal in that area have no published price: we quote them by day and time, because the bridge queue changes how long the service lasts.
The detail on the most requested leg is on transfers Asunción – Ciudad del Este, and the comparison against the bus and the flight is on the distance from Asunción to Ciudad del Este.
When it makes sense to hire us, and when it does not
We are a private transport company. We do not sell Itaipu tickets, we are not an inbound tour operator and we have no guide inside the plant. It is worth being blunt about that.
Worth it
- There are three or more of you: the price is per vehicle, so the USD 347 from Asunción to Ciudad del Este is the same whether one person travels or three.
- You want the vehicle waiting through the visit instead of hunting for a taxi at the complex gate.
- You are combining the dam with shopping and coming back with bulk, or carrying on to Foz do Iguaçu afterwards.
- You are a group with a confirmed booking time and cannot afford to depend on a scheduled bus.
- You are coming from abroad and would rather not drive on Paraguayan highways or cross the Friendship Bridge on your own.
Not worth it
- You are already in Foz do Iguaçu and visiting the Brazilian side: the distance is short and local transport handles it.
- You are travelling alone on a tight budget. The scheduled bus between Asunción and Ciudad del Este costs a fraction of this and takes about 5 hours.
- You want somebody to explain the engineering: that is Itaipu’s own tourism monitor, included in the visit, not our driver.
- You want us to make the Itaipu booking for you. It is a named booking tied to your document, made by the visitor or through the group list.
- You are in Ciudad del Este and your hotel is minutes from the Visitor Reception Centre, in that case a private transfer is money wasted.
What can change, and how to confirm before you set out
Itaipu’s hours and prices are not ours, and they are exactly the kind of figure that goes stale. Both sides adjust their programme seasonally, the Paraguayan side publishes separate summer and winter check-in times for the Monumental Illumination, and the Brazilian side runs limited places on nearly every tour.
One thing is worth saying out loud. While gathering the figures for this article we found two official Itaipu pages giving different opening hours for the Tati Yupi Refuge. We have published the times from the official visiting-hours PDF, which is the document dedicated to precisely that question, but the discrepancy is a good reason to treat confirming as the bare minimum rather than as excessive caution.
For the Paraguayan side, confirm on +595 61 5998040 and 5998094 or by email to cturistico@itaipu.gov.py. For the Brazilian side, the channel is turismoitaipu.com.br, with commercial service Monday to Friday 8:00 to 17:00 and weekends 8:00 to 16:20. A two-minute call settles what no blog can guarantee, this one included.
What does not change is the road. The 327 km from Asunción to Ciudad del Este will still be 327 km, and the 20 km across the bridge will still depend on the queue. That part is ours to handle, and it is the only part we will give you a fixed price on.
Frequently asked questions
The questions people actually send us on WhatsApp before visiting the dam.
How much does it cost to visit the Itaipu dam?
It depends on the side. On the Paraguayan side it is free: Itaipu states that access to any of the sites in the Tourist Complex is free of charge and that all you need is an identity document, or a passport for foreign visitors. On the Brazilian side, in Foz do Iguaçu, tickets run from R$ 48.00 to R$ 185.00 per person depending on the tour. Both figures were checked on 28 September 2026 on the official sources.
Is the Paraguayan side really free?
Yes. Itaipu Binacional publishes it plainly: “El acceso a cualquiera de los sitios del Complejo es gratuito, solo es necesario contar con el documento de identidad, y pasaporte en caso de los extranjeros.” There is no entrance ticket and no booking fee. What is compulsory is the document, and for some attractions a prior booking.
What are the opening hours on the Paraguayan side?
The Hydroelectric Plant visit runs Monday to Sunday with departures at 08:00, 09:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00, according to the official visiting-hours PDF for the right bank. The Tierra Guaraní Museum is Tuesday to Sunday 08:00 to 17:00, and the Scale Model and Tati Yupi Refuge are also Tuesday to Sunday.
Do I need to book to visit Itaipu from Paraguay?
For some attractions, yes. The Scale Model and the Tati Yupi Biological Refuge require a booking plus collection of the authorisation at the Visitor Reception Centre in Hernandarias, presenting documents and a passenger list. The Monumental Illumination must be booked by the Thursday of that week. Book on +595 61 5998040 and 5998094 or at cturistico@itaipu.gov.py.
Where exactly is the Paraguayan entrance?
At the Visitor Reception Centre in Hernandarias, the town adjoining Ciudad del Este. That is where documents are presented, authorisations collected and visits begin. Because Hernandarias sits right beside Ciudad del Este, the driving time from Asunción is effectively the same as to Ciudad del Este itself.
Which tour actually goes inside the dam?
On the Brazilian side it is Itaipu Especial: about 2 h 30, R$ 185.00 per person, external and internal route with stops at the heart of the plant and the Central Control Room, with limited places and times. On the Paraguayan side the Hydroelectric Plant visit also goes into the plant and includes a film, with hourly departures from 08:00 to 16:00.
Can you see the dam lit up at night?
Yes, on both sides, and only at weekends. On the Paraguayan side it is the Monumental Illumination on Fridays and Saturdays, with check-in at 19:30 on the summer schedule and 18:30 in winter, booked by the Thursday of that week. On the Brazilian side it is Itaipu Iluminada, Fridays and Saturdays at 19:00, R$ 50.00 per person, or Itaipu Iluminada Especial at R$ 180.00 with dinner.
Is Itaipu open on Mondays?
The Hydroelectric Plant visit on the Paraguayan side runs Monday to Sunday. The Museum, CIASI, the Scale Model and the Tati Yupi Refuge run Tuesday to Sunday. On the Brazilian side, Panorâmica and Especial run every day while the Biological Refuge is Wednesday to Monday. If your itinerary includes more than one attraction, Monday is the weakest day to go.
How long does it take from Asunción?
It is 327 km from Asunción to Ciudad del Este on route PY02 to Coronel Oviedo and then the PY07. By private vehicle that is 4 h 30 min to 5 h; the scheduled bus takes about 5 h. The Visitor Reception Centre is in Hernandarias, right next to Ciudad del Este, so the road time is almost identical.
What does the transfer from Asunción to Ciudad del Este cost?
From USD 347 per vehicle in a sedan for up to three passengers, or USD 539 for the return booked together. The Hyundai H1 minivan for up to seven is USD 397 and USD 672. The Mercedes Sprinter for 8 to 14 is USD 858. The price is per vehicle rather than per passenger and includes fuel, tolls and the driver.
Can I do Itaipu as a day trip from Asunción?
You can, but it is 9 to 10 hours of driving in total on top of the visit. It works if you leave early and the plant is your only plan. If you want to add the museum, shopping or the evening Monumental Illumination, it is better to stay the night in the area and drive back the next day.
Do you sell Itaipu tickets or tours?
No. We are private transport: we take you there and bring you back at a fixed price per vehicle. The Paraguayan booking is made directly with Itaipu, which requires a named document for each visitor, and the Brazilian ticket is bought at turismoitaipu.com.br. The guide inside the plant is Itaipu’s own tourism monitor.
Can I combine Itaipu with the Iguazu Falls?
Yes, if both are on the same side of the border and you start early. What we do not recommend is the dam on one side and the falls on the other on the same day: the Friendship Bridge eats an unpredictable amount of time and the day becomes a queue. With only one day, pick one side.
Is there a flight from Asunción to Ciudad del Este?
There is a private flight: 1 h 30 min in a Cessna 172, from USD 1,099 for the aircraft for up to three passengers. It costs considerably more than the road transfer, and what it buys you is the return day. For most trips the private vehicle or the bus is the better answer.
Choose the side first, the rest follows
If you are starting from Asunción or you are already in Ciudad del Este, the Paraguayan side is free, opens every day for the plant visit and is already on your side of the bridge. If you are based in Foz and you want the Central Control Room, the Brazilian side has the tour for that, and you pay for it. Once that is settled, the transport is the easy part.
The hours, attractions and requirements for the Paraguayan side come from the official PDF “Horarios de visitas Complejo Turístico Itaipu Margen Derecha” and from the tourism pages of itaipu.gov.py; the Brazilian tours and prices come from turismoitaipu.com.br. All checked on 28 September 2026. These are not our figures and Itaipu Binacional can change them without notice: check at source on the day you travel. Our prices are per vehicle in US dollars, from the August 2026 tariff, with fuel, tolls and driver included.
