Paraguay’s second city sits on the bank of the Parana river, right across from Foz do Iguacu in Brazil. This guide covers how to get there from either side, how the crossing works and what the city actually is.

Ciudad del Este is in the department of Alto Parana, on the Paraguayan bank of the Parana river, directly opposite Foz do Iguacu in Brazil. The Friendship Bridge links the two cities and almost everyone arrives across it. From Asuncion it is 327 km on Route PY02 to Coronel Oviedo and then PY07, between 4 h 30 min and 5 h of driving.

Each one suits a different starting point.

From Foz do Iguacu
The shortest way: cross the Friendship Bridge. The distance is tiny, but the time depends entirely on the queue on the bridge, which swings a lot depending on the day and the hour.

From Asuncion by road
327 km on Route PY02 to Coronel Oviedo and then PY07, between 4 h 30 min and 5 h. It is paved the whole way, it crosses no border, and it is the route our fleet drives most often.

Guarani airport, in Minga Guazu, takes domestic flights. Add the roughly 30 km transfer into the centre of Ciudad del Este at both ends of the trip.

From Puerto Iguazu
That means two borders: out of Argentina, across Brazil and into Paraguay. It can be done in a day, but the paperwork adds more time than the kilometres do.

By bus
There are regular services from Asuncion and from Foz. It is the cheapest option and the slowest, and it drops you at the terminal, not at your destination.

How the border works
The Friendship Bridge is what raises the most questions, and what causes the most delay.

Can you visit the Iguazu Falls from Ciudad del Este?
Yes, both sides. The Brazilian park is in Foz do Iguacu, across the bridge, and the Argentinian one in Puerto Iguazu, with a second crossing. The Argentinian side needs a full day; the Brazilian side fits into half a day.
Is it better to stay in Ciudad del Este or in Foz?
It depends on what you are there for. If the focus is shopping, staying on the Paraguayan side saves you one crossing a day. If the focus is the falls and the airport, Foz is usually more practical.
How do you get around inside Ciudad del Este?
The city is spread out and the centre is chaotic, so walking between distant points does not work well. Most people solve it with a vehicle and driver by the block of hours, which also gives you somewhere to leave the shopping.
Which currency should you use?
The official currency is the guarani, but the Brazilian real and the US dollar circulate freely in the shops. It is worth checking the exchange rate each shop applies before closing the purchase, because it varies a lot from one place to another.
