Asuncion tourist attractions in three days
Three days in Asuncion are enough for the whole city, for the Jesuit missions and for a third day that depends on where you go next. But only in that order, and only if you accept that one of the three is almost entirely road. Here is the split that works, with the hours and the price of each part.
The short answer
The tourist attractions of Asuncion do not fill three days. The historic centre fits in a morning and the full city circuit takes about five hours. What eats the three days is the distance to everything else in Paraguay. So the itinerary that works is one day in the city, one full day outside it and a shorter third day, not three days of similar sightseeing.
| Day 1, the city | Historic centre, the Costanera riverfront, Cerro Lambare, Villa Morra and the Botanical Garden. About 5 hours door to door |
| Day 2, the missions | Trinidad and Jesus de Tavarangue, in Itapua. Around 290 km each way, 4 to 5 hours of driving in each direction |
| Day 3, your choice | Asuncion with the car at your disposal, or Ciudad del Este if you are heading east afterwards |
| The city tour | About 5 hours with a bilingual driver-guide, from USD 147 per vehicle for up to 3 people. See the Asuncion city tour |
| The missions tour | A full day, 5 AM to 8:30 PM, guide and entrance tickets included, from USD 797 per vehicle. See the Jesuit missions tour |
| The car at your disposal | USD 197 for up to 8 hours or USD 127 for up to 4 hours, for a third day without a clock |
| From the airport | Silvio Pettirossi is in Luque, about 15 km from the centre. Transfer from USD 49 per vehicle, 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic |
| What does NOT fit | The Iguazu Falls from Asuncion are a 17 to 18 hour day. In three days it is either the falls or the missions, not both |
Why three days in Asuncion are not three days of sightseeing
The first thing we tell anyone who writes asking for a three-day itinerary is uncomfortable: the tourist attractions of Asuncion do not fill three days. The historic centre is compact, the Palacio de los Lopez, the Panteon Nacional de los Heroes, the Cabildo and the Casa de la Independencia are all within a few blocks, and the full city circuit, including the Costanera, the Cerro Lambare viewpoint, Villa Morra and the Botanical Garden, takes about five hours door to door.
That is not a flaw in Asuncion. It is what the city is: a capital founded on 15 August 1537, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in South America, with a historic centre legible in a few blocks and a life that happens in the neighbourhoods rather than around the monuments. Paraguayans call it la Madre de Ciudades, the Mother of Cities, because Buenos Aires was refounded from here.
What actually consumes your three days is geography. Paraguay is large, and the most striking things to see are not in the capital: the Jesuit missions of Trinidad and Jesus are about 290 km away, in Itapua, and Ciudad del Este is 327 km away. Each of those is a full day, not half a day. So the honest itinerary is one day of city, one day of road, and a third day you decide according to what you came for.
The rest of this article is that split, with the real timings, the measured distances and our prices per vehicle. Where the number is not ours, a museum opening time, the entrance fee at an archaeological site, we say whose it is and when we checked it.
The three-day itinerary, in one table
Hours are door to door, hotel to hotel. Prices are per vehicle rather than per passenger, in force since August 2026.
| Day | What it covers | Hours | From (per vehicle) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Transfer from Silvio Pettirossi airport to your hotel | 25 to 40 min | USD 49 for up to 3 |
| Day 1 | City tour: historic centre, Costanera, Cerro Lambare, Villa Morra, Botanical Garden | about 5 h | USD 147 for up to 3 |
| Night 1 | The Costanera, dinner and the city after dark | your call | depends on the leg |
| Day 2 | Jesuit missions of Trinidad and Jesus, in Itapua | 5 AM to 8:30 PM | USD 797 for up to 3 |
| Day 3 (A) | Asuncion with the car at your disposal: museums, neighbourhoods, shops | up to 8 h | USD 197 for up to 8 h |
| Day 3 (B) | Ciudad del Este, if you are travelling on eastwards | 4 h 30 to 5 h each way | USD 347 one way |
| Departure | Transfer from your hotel to the airport | 25 to 40 min | USD 84 return |
The city tour is USD 147 for up to three passengers and USD 49 for each additional passenger up to nine. The missions tour is USD 797 for up to three and USD 69 for each additional passenger up to seven. The airport transfer is USD 69 for groups of four to seven.
That table is the whole article. What follows is the reasoning behind each row, and above all behind the two versions of day 3, which is where the plan of someone flying home from Asuncion parts company with the plan of someone continuing to the Triple Frontier.
Day 1: the city, stop by stop
Five stops in about five hours. There is no fixed departure time, you pick it, and the order can be rearranged.
- 1
The historic centre, on foot
Palacio de los Lopez, the Panteon Nacional de los Heroes, the Cabildo and the Casa de la Independencia, all within a few blocks. The Casa de la Independencia was built in 1772 and is where the group of patriots met to plan the break with the Spanish empire on the night of 14 May 1811. It is a museum today and admission is free.
- 2
The Panteon Nacional de los Heroes
A block away. Francisco Solano Lopez ordered it built in October 1863 as an oratory to Our Lady of the Assumption; the War of the Triple Alliance interrupted the work, which stood unfinished for some seventy years until it was inaugurated on 12 October 1936. Admission is free.
- 3
The Costanera
The riverfront avenue along the Paraguay River and the bay, the newest public space in the city. It is where Asuncion breathes in the late afternoon.
- 4
Cerro Lambare
The viewpoint over the city, the river and the bay. It is the best single photograph of Asuncion and there is no ticket: it is an open-air lookout.
- 5
Villa Morra and the Botanical Garden
Villa Morra is modern Asuncion, all towers, offices and restaurants, the contrast that explains the city today. The Botanical Garden sits on the northern edge, with the old Lopez family residence inside it.
Asuncion sits about 43 metres above sea level on the left bank of the Paraguay River, facing the Argentine Chaco. That matters for a practical reason: it is hot for most of the year, and both the viewpoint and the historic centre are far better early in the morning or late in the afternoon than at midday.
If your dates fall on 14 and 15 May, know that the historic centre fills up for the independence celebrations. It is a good day to be there. It is not a good day to be in a hurry.
Day 2: the Jesuit missions, hour by hour
This is the day that decides the whole itinerary. It is around 290 km each way and 4 to 5 hours of driving in each direction.
- 5:00 AM
Departure from Asuncion
Pickup at your hotel and off to the south-east, towards Itapua. The hour is early on purpose: it is what makes it possible to sleep in Asuncion again the same night.
- ~10:00 AM
La Santisima Trinidad del Parana
The largest and best preserved of the reductions, founded in 1706. The monumental plaza, the carved stone church, the bell tower and the rows of indigenous houses still read as a town rather than as rubble.
- ~12:30 PM
Jesus de Tavarangue
Founded in 1685 and never finished, which is precisely what makes it interesting. The Jesuits were expelled from the Spanish empire in 1767 and the work stopped where it stood. Its three Moorish-arched portals have no equivalent anywhere in the region.
- ~2:00 PM
Lunch
In the area, at a restaurant we can suggest. The meal is not included.
- ~3:30 PM
The return begins
Back north-west, towards Asuncion.
- ~8:30 PM
Drop-off at your hotel
In Asuncion, the same day. That is about fifteen and a half hours door to door.
UNESCO inscribed both as World Heritage Sites in 1993, for what it called their outstanding universal value. Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, missionaries of the Society of Jesus founded across Paraguay a system of reductions where Jesuits and Guarani peoples lived under a single organisation built around faith, music, agriculture and craft. At their height they held tens of thousands of people and produced sculpture, instruments and books printed in Guarani.
On this tour, unlike the rest of ours, the bilingual guide and the entrance tickets are already in the price. It is USD 797 per vehicle for up to three passengers, plus USD 69 for each additional passenger up to seven: four people pay USD 866, five USD 935, six USD 1,004 and seven USD 1,073. The vehicle is a private air-conditioned Hyundai H1.
Day 3: two versions, and you pick one
This is where the plan of someone flying home from Asuncion separates from the plan of someone travelling on. Both versions work; mixing them is what does not.
Version A, Asuncion at your own pace, car at your disposal
- The vehicle is yours: USD 197 for up to 8 hours or USD 127 for up to 4 hours, driver included.
- It leaves time for what the city tour does not cover: a museum, a neighbourhood, a long lunch, the shops.
- Bags stay in the boot and you walk into each stop with your hands free.
- You can close the day with the airport transfer without racing the clock.
- This is the version that makes sense if you have already done the missions day and want no more driving.
Version B, Ciudad del Este, if you are travelling on
- It is 327 km on Route PY02 to Coronel Oviedo and then the PY07, 4 h 30 min to 5 h, without crossing any border.
- Private transfer from USD 347 per vehicle one way, or USD 539 return.
- From Ciudad del Este to Foz do Iguacu is about 20 km over the Friendship Bridge, 30 minutes to an hour depending on the queue.
- It only works as a departure leg: coming back to Asuncion the same day means 9 to 10 hours on the road for a day of shopping.
- Read first what is and is not worth buying in Ciudad del Este.
The practical rule is this. If Asuncion is your destination and you fly home from it, day 3 is version A. If Asuncion is the first stop of a trip that ends at the Triple Frontier, day 3 is version B and you do not come back, you carry on.
Two things about shopping that we repeat and never tire of. The exchange rate the shop uses to charge you is the shop rate, not the bank rate: two shops on the same block can give you two different totals for the same product for that reason alone, and the Central Bank of Paraguay publishes the daily reference so you can compare. And ask for a receipt on every purchase, including the small ones. On the customs allowance we publish no figure: it is set by the customs authority of the country you return to, it changes, and an out-of-date number is expensive at the control.
Distances and prices from Asuncion
Distances measured on our own routes and prices per vehicle from the August 2026 tariff. Sedan, 1 to 3 passengers.
| Destination | Distance | Driving time | One way · Return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greater Asuncion (Luque, San Lorenzo, Lambare, Nemby) | 8 to 25 km | depends on traffic | USD 97 · USD 168 |
| Silvio Pettirossi airport | about 15 km | 25 to 40 min | USD 49 · USD 84 |
| San Bernardino (Lake Ypacarai) | 55 km | about 1 h | USD 127 · USD 217 |
| Trinidad and Jesus (the missions) | about 290 km | 4 to 5 h | guided tour: USD 797 |
| Ciudad del Este | 327 km | 4 h 30 min to 5 h | USD 347 · USD 539 |
| Foz do Iguacu (Brazil) | 340 km | 5 to 6 h with the border | USD 417 · USD 707 |
| Puerto Iguazu (Argentina) | 350 km | 5 h 30 min to 6 h 30 min | USD 447 · USD 763 |
| Encarnacion | 370 km | 5 to 5 h 30 min | USD 417 · USD 707 |
The price is per vehicle rather than per passenger, with fuel, tolls and driver included. From the fourth passenger the Hyundai H1 minivan takes over, up to seven, and from eight to fourteen the Mercedes Sprinter. We price 237 destinations across all 16 departments of Paraguay, so if yours is not in the table, ask.
That table answers the question that arrives most often alongside a request for an itinerary: can Encarnacion and Ciudad del Este both fit in the same three days? They can, but that is two full days of driving with a night in between, and the third day turns into a transfer. If that is what you want, it is a route rather than a city itinerary, and we build it that way.
Opening times, tickets and what you pay separately
These are the sites and museums own numbers, checked in September 2026. None of it is set by us.
- Casa de la Independencia: free admission. Monday to Friday 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM and Saturday 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
- Panteon Nacional de los Heroes: free admission, in central Asuncion.
- Cerro Lambare: no ticket. It is an open-air viewpoint.
- Botanical Garden: open daily, with a small entrance fee. We do not publish the amount because it is not ours and it changes.
- The ruins of Trinidad and Jesus: open 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, every day of the year. The visitor centre at Trinidad runs from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
- One ticket covers three sites: Trinidad, Jesus de Tavarangue and San Cosme y Damian, and it is valid for 72 hours. The site fee is Gs 40,000 for foreign visitors and Gs 25,000 for Paraguayans, free up to the age of 12. On our missions tour that ticket is already included.
- San Cosme y Damian, the mission that housed the Jesuits astronomical observatory, is a detour of about an hour and a half from Trinidad and does not fit into the day tour. If you are staying in Encarnacion, the ticket is still valid.
- The night-time light and video mapping show at Trinidad runs Wednesday to Sunday, at 8 PM in summer and 7 PM in winter, and is not part of the day tour.
- What is never included: meals, drinks, personal expenses, tips and museum entrance fees where they apply, other than the ruins tickets on the missions tour.
What does not fit in three days, and we say so first
The Iguazu Falls from Asuncion. We run that trip and it works, but it is a 17 to 18 hour day door to door: departure at 3 AM, around 330 km each way and a return between 8 and 9 PM, from USD 697 per vehicle for up to three passengers. In a three-day itinerary it is either the missions or the falls. Both in the same block means two consecutive days of more than fifteen hours each, and by the third nobody wants to look at anything.
The Chaco. Filadelfia is 450 km away and Mariscal Estigarribia 530 km, about eight hours on the Transchaco highway. That is a trip in itself, not an extension of a weekend in the capital.
Encarnacion plus Ciudad del Este in the same window. We run the route, but it needs four days and a night outside Asuncion. Squeezed into three, it becomes transport with photo stops.
And an honest word about us: if you stay only in Asuncion, sleep in the centre and walk well, you do not need us every day. The historic circuit is done on foot and a ride-hailing app handles a short hop. We are worth it where that does not reach, the full day outside the city, the long route on a fixed schedule, the group with suitcases, the arrival at dawn and any international leg. For a three-block walk, do not bother calling us, and we will tell you so.
How it works when you book with us
The terms are the same for the city tour, for the missions tour and for any transfer.
- The price is per vehicle, not per person. A sedan carries one to three people for the same amount and takes three suitcases.
- From the fourth passenger onwards the Hyundai H1 minivan takes over, up to seven, with one suitcase per passenger. For eight to fourteen, the Mercedes Sprinter.
- A 30% deposit holds the date: USD 100 if the total is under USD 300 and USD 150 if it is USD 300 or more. The balance is paid the day before.
- Free cancellation up to 24 hours before. We accept card, bank transfer, digital wallet and crypto.
- Thirty minutes of free waiting on every service, then USD 10 per hour. If you need the car all day, the hourly service is better value: USD 197 for up to eight hours.
- On airport transfers we track your flight number. If you land late the driver is still there, with a sign bearing your name.
- One suitcase per passenger included. An extra suitcase is USD 5 on airport runs and USD 10 elsewhere. Tell us in advance about bicycles, instruments or oversized items.
- Fuel, tolls, parking and the paperwork for vehicle and driver are in the price. There is no surprise at the end.
Frequently asked questions
What people actually ask us on WhatsApp before settling a three-day itinerary.
What are the main tourist attractions in Asuncion?
The historic centre holds almost all of them: the Palacio de los Lopez, the Panteon Nacional de los Heroes, the Cabildo and the Casa de la Independencia, all within a few blocks of each other. Beyond it, the Costanera along the Paraguay River, the Cerro Lambare viewpoint, the modern district of Villa Morra and the Botanical Garden, which holds the old Lopez family residence. That is the circuit of our city tour and it takes about five hours.
Are three days in Asuncion too many or too few?
They are enough if one of the three is spent outside the city. The tourist attractions of Asuncion fit into a five-hour day; what fills the other two is the distance to the Jesuit missions, Ciudad del Este or Encarnacion. Three days inside the capital alone is a lot of time for a city you can see in five hours.
Can the Jesuit missions be done in a day from Asuncion?
They can, and that is what we run. It is around 290 km each way and 4 to 5 hours of driving in each direction. Departure is at 5 AM, you reach Trinidad around 10 AM and Jesus de Tavarangue around 12:30 PM, lunch is around 2 PM, and by 8:30 PM you are back at your hotel in Asuncion the same day. That is about fifteen and a half hours door to door.
How much is the Jesuit missions tour?
From USD 797 per vehicle for up to three passengers, plus USD 69 for each additional passenger up to seven: four pay USD 866, five USD 935, six USD 1,004 and seven USD 1,073. Unlike the rest of our tours, the bilingual guide and the entrance tickets to the ruins are already in the price here. Meals, drinks and personal expenses are not.
How much is the Asuncion city tour?
From USD 147 per vehicle for up to three passengers, plus USD 49 for each additional passenger up to nine. It is about five hours door to door, with a bilingual driver-guide, hotel pickup and a private air-conditioned vehicle. Museum entrance fees where they apply are not included, but the Casa de la Independencia and the Panteon are free.
Can I add the Iguazu Falls to those three days?
You can, but instead of the missions rather than as well as them. The one-day Iguazu Falls trip from Asuncion is 17 to 18 hours door to door, leaving at 3 AM and returning between 8 and 9 PM, from USD 697 per vehicle. Two consecutive days of more than fifteen hours on the road ruin the third. Pick one of the two.
Is Ciudad del Este worth it just for the shopping?
It depends where you are going next. It is 327 km and 4 h 30 min to 5 h each way, so as a departure leg towards the Triple Frontier it works very well. As a there-and-back on your third day it is 9 to 10 hours of driving for a day of shopping, and we usually advise against it when the traveller has already done the missions day.
How much is the transfer from Asuncion airport?
From USD 49 per vehicle for up to three passengers, or USD 69 for four to seven. A return booking is USD 84 in the sedan and USD 119 in the minivan. Silvio Pettirossi airport is in Luque, about 15 km from the centre, 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. We track your flight number and there are 30 minutes of free waiting.
Do I need a car with a driver every day?
No, and we say so up front. If you sleep in the centre, the historic circuit is done on foot and a ride-hailing app handles a short hop. It is worth calling us for the full day outside the city, the long route on a schedule, the dawn arrival with suitcases and any international leg.
What is the best time of day to see the city?
Early morning or late afternoon. Asuncion is hot for most of the year and both the historic centre and the Cerro Lambare viewpoint are far better outside the middle of the day. If your dates fall on 14 and 15 May, the centre fills up for the independence celebrations: worth being there, not worth being in a hurry.
How much is the entrance to the Trinidad and Jesus ruins?
The site fee is Gs 40,000 for foreign visitors and Gs 25,000 for Paraguayans, free up to the age of 12, and a single ticket covers Trinidad, Jesus de Tavarangue and San Cosme y Damian for 72 hours. The ruins are open 7 AM to 7 PM every day of the year. On our tour that ticket is already included.
Is there anything to do at night?
There is, and the Costanera is the natural starting point after dinner. We wrote a whole article on nightlife in Asuncion and how to get back, which is the part that usually goes wrong. There is also the yacht tour on the Paraguay River: four hours for USD 1,297 for the whole boat, up to fifteen people, with hotel transfers included. From 4 PM to 8 PM you catch the sunset.
How much luggage fits?
Three suitcases in the sedan for groups of up to three passengers, and one suitcase per passenger in the larger vehicles. An extra suitcase is USD 5 on airport runs and USD 10 elsewhere. Tell us in advance if you are carrying a bicycle, an instrument or an oversized item so we assign the right vehicle.
How do I book and how do I pay?
With a 30% deposit to hold the date, USD 100 if the total is under USD 300 and USD 150 if it is USD 300 or more, and the balance the day before. We accept card, bank transfer, digital wallet and crypto, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours ahead. The price is always per vehicle rather than per passenger.
Three days, three decisions, and we handle all three
The city day is the easy one. The missions day is the one that asks you to get up at five. The third depends on whether you finish in Asuncion or carry on east. Send us the dates, how many of you there are and where you go next, and we come back with the itinerary, real timings and a fixed price per vehicle.
Opening times and entrance fees for museums and ruins belong to the sites themselves, checked in September 2026, are not set by us and can change. Our prices are per vehicle in US dollars, in force since August 2026, with fuel, tolls and driver included. The customs allowance on purchases is set by the country you return to, which is why we publish no figure for it here.
