Ciudad del Este airport: where it is, what flies there and how to leave
Ciudad del Este does have an international airport, the Guaraní, but it sits in Minga Guazú, about 25 km from downtown, and currently has no scheduled passenger route. That is why nearly everyone arrives overland, from Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil or from Asunción.
The short answer
The airport is real, it has a long runway and it is international, but today it works for cargo, air taxis and private flights. If you are looking for an airline ticket to Ciudad del Este, you will most likely not find one. The flight that gets you close lands in Foz do Iguaçu, just across the border in Brazil, or in Asunción, Paraguay’s capital, and the last stretch is by road.
| Name and code | Guaraní International Airport. IATA code AGT, ICAO code SGES |
| Where it is | In Minga Guazú, Alto Paraná department, about 25 km west of downtown Ciudad del Este, on the road that comes in from Asunción |
| Scheduled passenger flights | None at the time of writing. The last scheduled route, Paranair’s Asunción to Ciudad del Este, is listed as terminated in May 2025 |
| What operates today | International cargo, which is most of the traffic, plus general aviation, air taxis and private flights |
| How many passengers used it | 3,402 in the whole of 2025, according to DINAC statistics. In 2008 it was 66,531 |
| How most people arrive | Through Foz do Iguaçu airport in Brazil and across the Friendship Bridge, or through Asunción airport and then 327 km by road |
| From Asunción by road | 327 km on routes PY02 and PY07, 4 h 30 min to 5 h by private car, from USD 347 per vehicle |
| From Asunción by air | Private flight straight to the Guaraní: 1 h 30 min in a Cessna 172, from USD 1,099 for the whole aircraft |
Where Ciudad del Este airport actually is
Some quick context first. Ciudad del Este is Paraguay’s second city and its commercial hub, sitting on the Paraná River right across from Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil, with Puerto Iguazú in Argentina a short drive away. This corner where three countries meet is known as the Triple Frontier, and most visitors come for the shopping, the Itaipú dam or the Iguazu Falls.
The airport’s official name is Guaraní International Airport, and it is not in Ciudad del Este itself. It is in Minga Guazú, the neighbouring municipality to the west, on the road you would drive coming from Asunción. Minga Guazú is the last town on route PY07 before Ciudad del Este.
The distance to downtown Ciudad del Este is about 25 km, according to the airport’s Wikipedia entry (checked on 10 October 2026), and the drive usually takes around half an hour. The shopping district is at the far eastern edge of the city, right by the Friendship Bridge into Brazil, so from the plane to the shop door you need the full distance plus the traffic on the avenue to the bridge, which crawls on busy days.
The airport is bigger than its traffic suggests. Runway 05/23 is 3,400 metres of asphalt, long enough for heavy cargo jets. That explains the role the Guaraní has taken in recent years: above all, it is a gateway for goods, not people.
What flies there and what does not
Situation as of 10 October 2026, based on the Wikipedia entries for the airport and for Paranair and on Paraguayan news coverage. We do not publish flight schedules or fares: they change, and they are not ours.
| Type of operation | Status in October 2026 | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled passenger flights | No active route. Paranair, which flew Asunción to Ciudad del Este, has the route listed as terminated since May 2025 | There is no airline ticket to buy with Ciudad del Este as the destination |
| International cargo | The bulk of the operation. Wikipedia lists cargo carriers linking the Guaraní with Miami, Bogotá, Campinas and Santiago de Chile | Much of the merchandise sold in the city comes in this way |
| Air taxi and private flights | Available on booking, in small aircraft flying in from Asunción and other airfields | The only way to fly straight into Ciudad del Este today |
| General aviation | Private and corporate aircraft land on their own flight plans | Relevant if you already own or have chartered a plane |
For years Asunción to Ciudad del Este was Paraguay’s only scheduled domestic route. It has been suspended and resumed more than once: Paranair brought it back in August 2022 with 50-seat CRJ-200 jets and dropped it in May 2025. It may return. Before ruling it out, check the airline’s website for your travel dates.
The question we get most from travellers outside the region is some version of “which airport do I fly into for Ciudad del Este?”. The practical answer is Foz do Iguaçu (IGU) in Brazil, Puerto Iguazú (IGR) in Argentina or Asunción (ASU) in Paraguay, depending on the rest of your trip. Not AGT.
The numbers behind the empty terminal
Annual statistics from DINAC, Paraguay’s civil aviation authority, as reproduced in the airport’s Wikipedia entry, checked on 10 October 2026.
| Year | Passengers | Aircraft movements | Cargo, tonnes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2008 | 66,531 | 6,663 | 9,349 |
| 2012 | 63,612 | 7,199 | 13,386 |
| 2019 | 32,573 | 7,002 | 6,342 |
| 2023 | 6,761 | 5,149 | 8,778 |
| 2024 | 7,722 | 5,349 | 11,412 |
| 2025 | 3,402 | 5,937 | 11,723 |
Aircraft movements and cargo rise while passenger numbers fall. In 2025 there were more landings and take-offs than in 2024, and fewer than half the passengers.
Read the table from the bottom up and the story tells itself. In 2025 the Guaraní handled 3,402 passengers across the whole year, fewer than ten a day. Over the same period it moved 11,723 tonnes of cargo and logged 5,937 aircraft movements, the highest figure since 2019. Planes still come in. They bring boxes, not travellers.
For trip planning the lesson is simple: do not build your itinerary around a flight that may not exist. Build it around an airport with daily flights and work out the road from there.
How nearly everyone gets to Ciudad del Este
The three real options, with times and prices from our August 2026 rate card. Prices are per vehicle, not per passenger, and include fuel, tolls and driver.
| Option | How it works | Time for the last leg | Our price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduled flight to Foz do Iguaçu | You land on the Brazilian side and cross the Friendship Bridge by road | About 20 km from Foz to Ciudad del Este, 30 min to 1 h depending on the bridge queue | On request, depending on day and time |
| Scheduled flight to Asunción | You land at Silvio Pettirossi and take routes PY02 and PY07, no border involved | 327 km, 4 h 30 min to 5 h by private car | Sedan from USD 347, minivan USD 397, Sprinter USD 858 |
| Private flight to the Guaraní | Small aircraft from Asunción straight to Minga Guazú, same-day return included | 1 h 30 min in a Cessna 172, or 50 min in a Baron 58 | From USD 1,099 for the aircraft, up to 3 passengers |
A return trip Asunción to Ciudad del Este booked together costs USD 539 by sedan for up to 3 people and USD 672 by minivan for up to 7. The scheduled bus takes about 5 h: it is the cheapest option if you travel alone and are not in a hurry.
If you are already doing the Iguazu Falls, Foz do Iguaçu is the natural gateway, and the crossing to Ciudad del Este is short. We cover it in Transfers Ciudad del Este – Foz do Iguaçu, with drivers who know the border formalities.
If you are flying into Paraguay through Asunción, the road is the logical choice. It is 327 km through San Lorenzo, Caacupé, Coronel Oviedo and Caaguazú before Minga Guazú, with no border on the way. Details in Transfers Asunción – Ciudad del Este.
If you are landing at the Guaraní: how to get out
This applies if you have chartered a plane, booked an air taxi or fly corporate. At an airport with so few passengers, nothing can be improvised on arrival.
- 1
Arrange your transfer before take-off
With fewer than ten passengers a day on average, do not count on a taxi rank at the door. Send your estimated landing time and group size in advance.
- 2
Carry your passport
If you plan to cross into Brazil or Argentina the same day, your documents will be checked at the bridge, not at the airport.
- 3
Know your final destination before you land
Downtown Ciudad del Este, your hotel, the shopping district, Foz do Iguaçu and Puerto Iguazú are all different drives with different times. If you know where you are going, you leave faster.
- 4
Allow about 25 km to downtown
Around half an hour to the centre of Ciudad del Este. A bit more to the shopping district by the bridge, and a lot more on busy days.
- 5
Heading to Brazil? Add the bridge
From Ciudad del Este to Foz do Iguaçu is about 20 km, 30 min to 1 h depending on the border queue. The bridge is the most unpredictable part of the day.
- 6
Heading to Argentina? Two borders
Puerto Iguazú is about 50 km from Minga Guazú, but the road crosses the Friendship Bridge and then the Tancredo Neves Bridge. That is two immigration checks, and the time depends on both queues.
If you are still deciding how to go, a private flight from Asunción is the only way to land directly at the Guaraní today: 1 h 30 min in a Cessna 172 for up to 3 passengers, or 50 min in a Baron 58 for up to 5, with 10 kg of hand luggage per person. Everything is on Private flights Asunción – Ciudad del Este.
Distances from Guaraní airport
The 25 km to downtown and the 50 km to Puerto Iguazú come from public sources checked on 10 October 2026. The other legs are our own road measurements.
| Destination | Approximate distance | What drives the time |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Ciudad del Este | About 25 km | Around half an hour, more at rush hour |
| Shopping district and Friendship Bridge | A little more than downtown | Traffic on the avenue to the bridge |
| Foz do Iguaçu | The 25 km to Ciudad del Este plus about 20 km to Foz | The Friendship Bridge queue, 30 min to 1 h on the Ciudad del Este to Foz leg |
| Puerto Iguazú | About 50 km | Two borders: the Friendship Bridge and the Tancredo Neves Bridge |
| Asunción | Slightly less than the 327 km from Asunción to Ciudad del Este | Minga Guazú is on the same PY07 road |
None of these times includes border waits on Brazilian public holidays, when the Friendship Bridge can be jammed for hours.
When to call us and when not to
We are a private transport company. We do not sell airline tickets and we have no desk at the airport. Here is where we help and where we do not.
Worth it
- You are landing at the Guaraní on a private or corporate flight and need someone waiting at the exit.
- You are three or more coming from Asunción: the price is per vehicle, so the USD 347 sedan costs the same for one person or three.
- You land at the Guaraní and want to go straight on to Foz do Iguaçu or Puerto Iguazú, with the driver handling the border crossing.
- You need to go to Ciudad del Este and back from Asunción in a day, and a private flight with the return included works out for your group.
- You are carrying luggage or shopping and do not want to rely on the scheduled bus.
Not worth it
- You travel alone, on a tight budget and with time to spare: the bus from Asunción to Ciudad del Este takes about 5 h and costs a fraction.
- You are staying in Foz and only want an afternoon at the shops: plenty of people cross the bridge on their own, and a private transfer may be overkill.
- You want to buy a flight to Ciudad del Este: we do not sell those, and there is currently no scheduled flight to buy.
- You fly alone and want to save money: a private flight costs much more than the road and only pays off when your time is worth more than the difference.
How to check before you book
Paraguay’s air route map changes, and the route to Ciudad del Este has been suspended and resumed several times since the pandemic. What holds today may not hold for your travel month. That is why this post gives no times or fares for any commercial flight: it only reports what we found on the date we checked.
To see whether scheduled flights to the Guaraní have returned, search for the route with the codes ASU and AGT on the websites of Paraguayan airlines and on flight search engines. If you only get long connections through other cities, there is no direct flight. Be wary of search pages showing big international airlines flying to AGT: many are auto-generated for routes that do not exist. Airport traffic statistics are published by DINAC.
If nothing turns up, the plan stays simple: fly into Foz do Iguaçu or Asunción and do the last stretch by road. The road is not going anywhere. The 327 km from Asunción to Ciudad del Este are still 327 km, and the 20 km across the bridge still depend on the queue. That is the part we take care of.
Frequently asked questions
What people actually ask us on WhatsApp before booking a trip to Ciudad del Este.
Does Ciudad del Este have an airport?
Yes. It is Guaraní International Airport, code AGT, in Minga Guazú, about 25 km from downtown Ciudad del Este. But as of 10 October 2026 it had no scheduled passenger route: it handles cargo, air taxis and private flights.
Which airport should I fly into for Ciudad del Este?
Usually Foz do Iguaçu (IGU) in Brazil, about 20 km from Ciudad del Este across the Friendship Bridge, or Asunción (ASU), Paraguay’s main international airport, 327 km away by road. Puerto Iguazú (IGR) in Argentina also works, but means crossing two borders.
Are there flights from Asunción to Ciudad del Este?
Not scheduled ones at the time of writing: Paranair’s route is listed as terminated in May 2025. Private ones, yes: 1 h 30 min in a Cessna 172 for up to 3 passengers, from USD 1,099 for the aircraft, or 50 min in a Baron 58 for up to 5, from USD 2,549, with a same-day return included.
What is the airport code for Ciudad del Este?
AGT is the IATA code, the one flight search engines use, and SGES is the ICAO code used in flight plans. If a site shows “flights to AGT” with airlines that have never operated there, be sceptical: many search engines generate automatic pages for routes that do not exist.
How far is the airport from the shopping malls?
About 25 km to downtown Ciudad del Este, roughly half an hour. The shopping district is at the eastern edge of the city, by the bridge, so allow a little more, and a lot more on busy days when the avenue to the bridge slows down.
Can I go from Guaraní airport straight to Foz do Iguaçu?
Yes. The road runs through Ciudad del Este and across the Friendship Bridge. On top of the drive into the city, add about 20 km to Foz, 30 min to 1 h depending on the border queue. We do not publish a price for this leg: we quote it based on day and time.
And to Puerto Iguazú in Argentina?
Also possible. Puerto Iguazú is about 50 km from Minga Guazú, but the road crosses the Friendship Bridge and then the Tancredo Neves Bridge, which means two immigration checks. Carry your passport and expect the time to depend on both queues.
Why does the airport have so few passengers?
Because it has no scheduled passenger route. According to DINAC statistics, the Guaraní handled 3,402 passengers in the whole of 2025, against 66,531 in 2008. Cargo, on the other hand, reached 11,723 tonnes in 2025: the airport has become, above all, a cargo terminal.
How much is a transfer from Asunción to Ciudad del Este?
With us, from USD 347 per vehicle by sedan for up to 3 passengers, or USD 539 for a return trip booked together. Minivan for up to 7: USD 397 and USD 672. Sprinter for 8 to 14 passengers: USD 858. It is 327 km, 4 h 30 min to 5 h, with fuel, tolls and driver included.
Is it better to fly into Foz do Iguaçu or Asunción?
If Ciudad del Este is part of an Iguazu Falls trip, Foz is usually better: the last leg is short, though it depends on the bridge queue. Asunción makes sense if you want to see Paraguay’s capital, are arriving on an international connection there, or want to travel without crossing a border.
Do you pick up passengers at Guaraní airport?
Yes, on booking. Send us your estimated landing time, group size and final destination, whether Ciudad del Este, Foz do Iguaçu, Puerto Iguazú or Asunción, and we reply with a fixed price per vehicle.
Could scheduled flights to Ciudad del Este come back?
They could. The Asunción to Ciudad del Este route has been suspended and resumed more than once in recent years. Before you travel, search for ASU to AGT on airline websites and flight search engines. If nothing shows up, the plan is still to fly into Foz or Asunción and finish by road.
How do I book with you and how do I pay?
On WhatsApp: date, starting point, destination and number of people. We reply with a fixed price per vehicle. We quote in US dollars and also accept guaraníes, Brazilian reais and Argentine pesos.
The airport is there, the flights are not
Ciudad del Este has an international airport with a cargo-jet runway, and today it serves freight and people flying private. If Iguazu is on your trip, fly into Foz and cross the bridge. If you are coming through Asunción, it is 327 km by road or 1 h 30 min by private flight. Tell us where you start, how many you are and when, and we will take care of the rest.
The location, runway, cargo carriers and DINAC statistics come from the Guaraní International Airport entry on Wikipedia; the status of Paranair’s route from the airline’s entry on the same encyclopedia and from aviation news coverage; the distance to Puerto Iguazú from the newspaper Última Hora. All checked on 10 October 2026. These are not our figures and may change: confirm with the airline before booking. Our prices are per vehicle, in US dollars, from our August 2026 rate card, with fuel, tolls and driver.
