Flights to Paraguay: which airlines fly there and where you land
Paraguay has one international airport that really matters: Silvio Pettirossi, in Luque, next to Asuncion. There are no nonstop flights from North America yet, so most visitors from outside South America connect through Sao Paulo, Panama, Bogota, Lima or Madrid.
The short answer
Paraguay’s air map is small and fits into one airport. The list below is the passenger network at Silvio Pettirossi as checked on 11 October 2026; seasonal routes open and close, so confirm on the airline’s own website before you pay.
| Where you land | Silvio Pettirossi International (ASU), in Luque, about 15 km from central Asuncion, 25 to 40 minutes by car depending on traffic |
| From North America | No nonstop service yet. Connect in Panama (Copa), Bogota (Avianca), Lima or Santiago (LATAM) or Sao Paulo (LATAM and GOL). GOL has announced Asuncion to Miami from June 2026 |
| From Europe | Air Europa flies nonstop from Madrid, the only direct link between Paraguay and Europe. Everything else connects in South America |
| From Brazil | Sao Paulo-Guarulhos (LATAM and GOL) and Rio de Janeiro-Galeao (GOL and JetSMART), plus seasonal summer flights |
| From Argentina | Buenos Aires-Aeroparque (Aerolíneas Argentinas, JetSMART and Paranair), Salta and Jujuy (Paranair). Flybondi has announced Buenos Aires and Cordoba |
| Rest of South America | Santiago and Lima (LATAM), Montevideo (Paranair), Santa Cruz de la Sierra (BoA and Paranair) |
| Ciudad del Este and Encarnación | Both have international airports, but almost no scheduled passenger flights today |
| From the airport to your hotel | Private transfer from USD 49 per vehicle, up to 3 passengers, with flight tracking and 30 minutes of free waiting time |
One country, one airport that counts
If you are looking for flights to Paraguay from outside South America, the first thing to know is that you will almost certainly be flying into one place: Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, in the town of Luque, right next to the capital, Asuncion. Paraguay has other airports with international status on paper, but scheduled passenger traffic is concentrated almost entirely there. It is the base for LATAM Paraguay, Paranair and Sol del Paraguay, and every foreign airline that serves the country lands there.
The second thing to know is that, as of October 2026, there is no nonstop flight from the United States, Canada or the United Kingdom. Paraguay is reached through a South American or Central American hub. Panama City, Bogota, Lima, Santiago and Sao Paulo are the usual connecting points from North America; Madrid is the only nonstop option from Europe.
We see this map every day from the arrivals door at Silvio Pettirossi, because meeting flights is a large part of our work. This guide does not cover fares or flight times, which change every week. It covers what changes slowly: which airlines operate, which cities have direct routes, which airports receive international flights and what happens between touchdown and your hotel.
The network below was checked on 11 October 2026 against the airport’s destinations table and the airlines’ own route announcements. New and seasonal routes are marked as such. If you are booking weeks ahead, treat the list as a map, and the airline’s website as the final word.
Which airlines fly to Asuncion, and from where
Passenger network at Silvio Pettirossi checked on 11 October 2026 against the airport’s destinations table and each airline’s announcements. No fares and no schedules: check those when you book.
| Airline | Cities with a nonstop flight to Asuncion | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Copa Airlines | Panama City | The main connection from the United States, Canada, Central America and the Caribbean |
| Avianca | Bogota | Connects with Avianca’s network in Colombia and North America |
| LATAM Paraguay | Sao Paulo-Guarulhos, Santiago, Lima | Montevideo announced from 28 December 2026 |
| GOL | Sao Paulo-Guarulhos, Rio de Janeiro-Galeao | Florianopolis in season; Miami announced from June 2026 |
| Air Europa | Madrid | The only nonstop flight between Paraguay and Europe |
| Paranair | Buenos Aires-Aeroparque, Montevideo, Salta, Jujuy, Santa Cruz de la Sierra | Florianopolis, Rio de Janeiro and Punta del Este in the southern summer only |
| JetSMART | Buenos Aires-Aeroparque, Rio de Janeiro-Galeao | The Rio route started in January 2026 |
| Aerolíneas Argentinas | Buenos Aires-Aeroparque | Connects with Argentina’s domestic network |
| Flybondi | Buenos Aires and Cordoba | Announced routes; check that they are operating |
| Boliviana de Aviación | Santa Cruz de la Sierra | Bolivia’s state airline |
Sources: the airlines and destinations table for Silvio Pettirossi International Airport on Wikipedia (English and Spanish editions) and route announcements reported by Aviacionline, ch-aviation and La Nación, all checked on 11 October 2026. Seasonal and announced routes may not be operating in the month you travel.
The United States is coming back onto the map. In January 2026 Silvio Pettirossi received security clearance from the US Transportation Security Administration, which reopens the door to nonstop flights, and GOL has announced an Asuncion to Miami route. Until that link is well established, plan on connecting through one of the hubs in the table.
From the UK and the rest of Europe, the choice is between the nonstop from Madrid and a connection through Sao Paulo. From Australia or Asia, the most common route is via Santiago or Sao Paulo.
The other airports: Ciudad del Este, Encarnación and the Iguazu option
Flight search sites show other airport codes besides ASU. It helps to know what each of them really offers before you build a trip around it.
- Guaraní (AGT), in Minga Guazú, outside Ciudad del Este. It is an international airport with a long runway, but today it handles mostly cargo. Scheduled passenger flights are rare. What exists and what to expect is covered in Ciudad del Este airport.
- Teniente Amín Ayub González (ENO), in Encarnación. Flybondi announced a route from Buenos Aires in 2025, and the city is still working with the aviation authority to bring in tourist flights. Check that the route is operating before you plan around it.
- Foz do Iguacu (IGU), on the Brazilian side. It is not in Paraguay, but it is the most common way into eastern Paraguay by air: Ciudad del Este is about 20 km away across the Friendship Bridge.
- Puerto Iguazu (IGR), on the Argentine side. Useful if you are seeing the falls from Argentina. Reaching Paraguay from there means two borders: the Tancredo Neves Bridge into Brazil, then the Friendship Bridge.
- Domestic flights inside Paraguay. The scheduled network is minimal. To get from Asuncion to Ciudad del Este, Encarnación or the Chaco in a day, the alternative to the road is a private flight: Asuncion to Ciudad del Este takes 1 h 30 min in a Cessna 172, from USD 1,099 for the aircraft.
Our rule of thumb on WhatsApp: if your trip is about Asuncion, Encarnación or the interior, fly into ASU. If it is about Iguazu Falls, the Itaipu dam or Ciudad del Este, flying into Foz do Iguacu is often simpler, with the last stretch done by road, as explained on transfers Ciudad del Este – Foz do Iguacu.
What happens when you land in Asuncion
Silvio Pettirossi is a small terminal with two international piers. The north pier was renovated in 2023 and the arrivals hall became much larger. From the aircraft to the kerb, the sequence is always the same.
- 1
Disembark and a short walk
The terminal is compact. From the gate to immigration is a few minutes on foot, with no train and usually no apron bus.
- 2
Immigration
Citizens of Mercosur countries can enter with a national ID card; everyone else needs a passport. Whether you also need a visa depends on your nationality, as explained in Paraguay entry requirements.
- 3
Baggage reclaim
When two large flights arrive together, this is where you lose the most time. In the small hours the belt is usually quick; in the evening, with several arrivals from Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires, it can be slower.
- 4
Customs
A customs check with your luggage. If you have nothing to declare, it is quick.
- 5
Arrivals hall
On the way out you will find currency exchange desks, mobile phone shops and the taxi counters. If you booked a transfer, your driver is waiting there with a sign bearing your name.
- 6
Into the city
It is about 15 km to central Asuncion, 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. Villa Morra and the newer hotel district take about the same.
A full walk-through of leaving the terminal, including what works by taxi and by ride-hailing app, is in Asuncion airport: arriving, leaving and getting into the city. Here the focus is on what is worth knowing while you are still choosing your flight.
Arriving in the middle of the night
Many of the connections into Asuncion land late at night or in the early hours. That is what a small network looks like: airlines slot the Paraguay leg after the connection banks at Panama, Bogota, Lima or Sao Paulo, and the aircraft touches down when the city is asleep.
That is not a problem in itself. The airport is open, immigration is staffed and the bags come out. What changes is what is waiting outside. In the small hours there are fewer taxis in the rank, ride-hailing apps can take a while to find a driver, and many exchange desks are closed. If you arrive with dollars or euros and no guaranies, it helps to know your options in advance: see money in Paraguay.
The other thing a night arrival changes is hotel check-in. Many hotels in Asuncion only release rooms in the afternoon. If your flight lands at 3 am, book the night before or get early check-in confirmed in writing. Every week we drive passengers the 25 minutes to their hotel only for them to find they will be waiting in the lobby until midday.
So when you compare flights, do not look only at the fare. A flight that lands at 2 pm with one more connection can give you a far better first day than the nonstop leg that lands at 2 am. And if you do take the night arrival, book your ride ahead: the driver tracks your flight number and, if it is late, is still there.

When to book us, and when not to
We are a private transport company, not a travel agent. We do not sell airline tickets and have no deal with any airline. With that said, honestly:
Book us if
- Your flight lands in the middle of the night and you do not want to rely on a taxi or an app.
- There are three or more of you: the price is per vehicle, so the USD 49 airport fare is the same for one passenger or three.
- You land in Asuncion but are heading to Ciudad del Este, the falls or Encarnación, and want to go straight from the airport onto the highway.
- You are travelling with children, a lot of luggage or equipment, and need a minivan or a Sprinter.
- It is a business trip and the timing cannot slip: we track the flight and wait if it is late.
Do not book us if
- You are travelling alone, with a backpack, arriving in daylight and going into the centre: a taxi or an app will do.
- Your trip is all about Iguazu Falls and you have not bought your flight yet: flying into Foz do Iguacu is probably better than flying to Asuncion and driving 340 km.
- You want us to find you the cheapest flight: that is a job for a flight search site or a travel agent.
- You are picking up a rental car at the airport and driving yourself.
- Your hotel offers its own transfer included in the room rate.
How to check a route before you pay
None of the routes in this guide are ours, and Paraguay’s air network moves more than most in the region. Low-cost airlines come and go, summer routes open in December and close in February or March, and an announced route does not always become a scheduled one. That is why we mark as announced the routes we have not yet seen operating.
To confirm, the shortest path is to search for the nonstop leg on the airline’s own website, with your exact travel date. If the route does not show up in the booking calendar, it is not operating on that date, whatever the press release said. Flight search sites help you see who flies where, but the airline always has the final word.
It is also worth looking at everything we do before you settle your itinerary. If your trip takes in Asuncion, Ciudad del Este and the falls, the mix of flights and road changes depending on the order: have a look at our services and plan the trip backwards, from where you need to be on each day.
What does not change is the ground. The airport stays 15 km from the centre, Ciudad del Este stays 327 km away and the Friendship Bridge still has a queue. That is the part we handle, and the only part we give a fixed price for.
