Black Friday in Ciudad del Este: the busiest dates and how to plan the crossing

Ciudad del Este does not hold its Black Friday on 27 November. The official event runs from 19 to 22 November 2026, wrapped around a Brazilian public holiday. Here is the Friendship Bridge queue calendar through New Year, and what to do on each date.

The short answer

If you read one block, read this one. Ciudad del Este is a duty-free shopping city on the Paraguayan side of the Paraná River, and most of its Black Friday shoppers are Brazilians who cross the Friendship Bridge from Foz do Iguaçu. That is why the event is timed to a Brazilian holiday, and why the queue, not the shops, decides how your day goes.

Official Black Friday in Ciudad del Este Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 November 2026, 8 am to 6 pm, according to the event’s official website and the Ciudad del Este Chamber of Commerce and Services
What about 27 November? That is the US Black Friday, also used by Brazilian retailers. The official event in Ciudad del Este will have ended five days earlier
The hardest day to cross Friday 20 November: Black Consciousness Day, a national holiday in Brazil, in the middle of the event and joined to the weekend
Best time to go in from Foz Early. Being on the Paraguayan side when the shopping circuit opens at 8 am is the difference between a shopping day and a queuing day
Best time to return to Brazil Before mid afternoon. The circuit closes at 6 pm and the return through Brazilian customs bunches up around that time
Normal time, Ciudad del Este to Foz About 20 km, 30 min to 1 h. On peak days we do not publish a fixed figure: it depends on that day’s queue at that hour
Normal time, Ciudad del Este to Puerto Iguazú 30 to 40 km, 45 min to 1 h 30, passing through Brazil. On Black Friday the first bridge is the one that hurts
When to book a transfer For 19 to 22 November, now. A 30% deposit locks the date and the departure time

The date that trips people up: it is not the 27th

The question we get most on WhatsApp in October is “when is Black Friday in Ciudad del Este”. Almost everyone has 27 November in mind, the US date. In Ciudad del Este the calendar works differently.

The official event, run by the Ciudad del Este Chamber of Commerce and Services, takes place from 19 to 22 November 2026, from 8 am to 6 pm, in a shopping circuit in the city centre. The dates appear on the official site blackfridayoficial.com.py and in the declaration of national interest approved by Paraguay’s Chamber of Deputies, both checked on 14 October 2026. The event was launched at the Chamber of Commerce on 23 July.

The timing is deliberate. Friday 20 November is Black Consciousness Day (Dia Nacional de Zumbi e da Consciência Negra), a nationwide public holiday in Brazil since Law 14.759/2023. In 2026 it falls on a Friday, according to Ministerial Order MGI 11.460, published in Brazil’s Official Gazette on 30 December 2025. That gives four days of event, three of them days off for most Brazilians, and the shoppers come from Brazil.

So for anyone crossing the Friendship Bridge, the peak of the year is not the US Black Friday: it is the weekend of 19 to 22 November. The 27th still brings extra traffic, because some shops run their own promotions on other dates, but it does not stack the whole event on top of a Brazilian holiday.

This post is not about what to buy or about how the crossing works in general. It is only about dates: which days the bridge fills up, what time to cross, how the return through Brazilian customs behaves, and how far ahead to book.

The peak calendar, date by date

Brazilian holidays from Ministerial Order MGI 11.460 and the Paraguayan holiday of 8 December, checked on 14 October 2026. The reading of the queue is ours, from running these routes all year.

Date What happens How the bridge looks What we do
Sat 31/10 to Mon 2/11 All Souls’ Day (Finados), a Brazilian holiday on the Monday Brazilian long weekend: busy Saturday, heavy return on Monday afternoon Go early on Saturday; return before mid afternoon on Monday
Sun 15/11 Proclamation of the Republic, on a Sunday No long weekend: an ordinary Sunday A good day to get ahead
Thu 19/11 First day of the official Black Friday A working day in Brazil, but with the event open: the inbound queue starts before the shops open The best day of the event if you can choose
Fri 20/11 Black Consciousness Day, Brazilian national holiday, mid-event The busiest day of the year to cross, in both directions In before 7 am; back before mid afternoon or well after closing
Sat 21/11 Third day of the event, still in the long weekend Heavy inbound in the morning, return bunched at the end of the afternoon Same rule as Friday
Sun 22/11 Last day of the event Lighter inbound, heavy return: holiday visitors head home If you can pick one day, early Sunday usually works best
Fri 27/11 US Black Friday, also used by Brazilian retailers Above-normal traffic, with no official event and no holiday A working day with a weekend-sized queue
Tue 8/12 Virgin of Caacupé, national holiday in Paraguay The bridge is not the issue: the PY02 highway runs through Caacupé From Asunción, leave before dawn or pick another day
Thu 24 to Sun 27/12 Christmas, on a Friday End-of-year shopping up to the 24th and a long weekend after it Go in early up to the 23rd; avoid returning on Sunday 27
Thu 31/12 to Sun 3/1 New Year’s Day, on a Friday Holiday and end-of-year traffic Same logic as Christmas

The whole of December is busier than an ordinary month, because of end-of-year shopping and Brazilian school holidays. The holidays in the table are the ones that change the queue most; optional days off in Brazil, such as Public Servants’ Day on 28 October, change it little.

If your plans have some slack, the rule is simple: working day before holiday, morning before afternoon, early Sunday before Saturday afternoon. What cannot be fixed is Friday 20 November, when event and holiday add up.

What time to cross on the weekend of 19 to 22 November

The event circuit runs from 8 am to 6 pm, according to the official site. The whole timing logic comes from those two numbers.

  1. 1

    Cross before the shops open

Whoever reaches the bridge at 9 am meets the queue of everyone who left at 7. Leaving Foz before 7 am puts you in Ciudad del Este as the circuit opens.

  2. 2

Fix the pickup point before you cross

In central Ciudad del Este on event days, a driver cannot wait outside a shop door. Agree on an exact pickup address and a second one in case the first street is closed.

  3. 3

Set the return time by the queue, not by the shopping

The 6 pm closing sends everyone to the bridge at once. Leave Ciudad del Este in the early afternoon and traffic is still moving; leave at 6 pm and you join the wave.

  4. 4

If you are late, let the wave pass

After closing, leaving at 6 pm or at 7:30 pm can land you in Foz at roughly the same time. Having dinner on the Paraguayan side and crossing later is often the least tiring option.

  5. 5

Consider a night in Ciudad del Este

If you are doing two days of the event, one night on the Paraguayan side cuts out a round trip across the bridge at the worst hours.

For a sense of scale: according to Brazilian Federal Revenue (Receita Federal) data cited by Brasilturis on 27 November 2025, last year’s edition saw 36,194 pedestrians cross into Paraguay on the Thursday, which was the Black Consciousness holiday, and 36,394 on the Friday. Saturday had 22,495 and Sunday 7,442. Those are pedestrians only, not cars, but they show the pattern: the first two days are the worst, and Sunday is much lighter going in.

The return through Brazilian customs: where the queue really bites

Going in, the queue is made of people who want to arrive early. Coming back to Brazil, it is everyone at once, with one more step: the Receita Federal inspection on the Brazilian side, with cars and boots full of shopping.

There is no official waiting time per hour, and we are not going to make one up. The clearest public figure we found is from 2023: on Black Friday that year, the Brazilian outlet TNH1 reported a queue of about 2.5 km and waits of two to three hours at peak times, against 20 to 30 minutes on a normal day. A second bridge has opened since, but as explained below it does not help anyone crossing by car.

In practice, what changes the return time is the hour. The main wave starts when the circuit closes at 6 pm, and adds the shoppers to everyone who spent the holiday in Foz and crossed over for a look. Leaving in the early afternoon is usually the difference between a normal return and a holiday return.

If you are heading to Puerto Iguazú, on the Argentine side, the maths is the same with one more leg: first that Friendship Bridge queue, then Foz and the Tancredo Neves Bridge into Argentina, which on these days moves like an ordinary weekend. Each country’s duty-free allowance is covered in a separate post, so we do not repeat it here.

One point that is easy to miss: the crossing time that eats into your day is the return, not the outbound. If you have a flight out of Foz or Puerto Iguazú on Sunday 22 in the evening, do not leave the crossing for late afternoon.

The new Integration Bridge does not help if you travel by car

Since December 2025 there has been a second bridge between Foz do Iguaçu and Paraguay, the Integration Bridge (Ponte da Integração), linking Foz with Presidente Franco. Its stated purpose is to take traffic off the Friendship Bridge.

However, under Executive Declaratory Act SRRF09 No. 19 of 31 July 2026, published in Brazil’s Official Gazette on 3 August, the Receita Federal cleared it for empty cargo vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, the Foz do Iguaçu to Presidente Franco city buses, scheduled international coaches and tourist charter coaches whose final destination is neither Foz do Iguaçu nor Ciudad del Este. Private cars, taxis and transfers are not on the list, according to the Diário do Transporte report checked on 14 October 2026.

So if you go by car, by taxi or with us, Black Friday still runs through the Friendship Bridge. If the rule changes before November, check with the Receita Federal before building your plan around it.

How long each leg takes with us

Times measured on our own services, on a normal day. On peak days the border legs have no fixed figure, which is why we quote by day and hour.

Leg Distance Normal day On Black Friday
Ciudad del Este to Foz do Iguaçu About 20 km 30 min to 1 h Depends on the bridge queue; leave a wide margin on the return
Ciudad del Este to Puerto Iguazú 30 to 40 km 45 min to 1 h 30 The Friendship Bridge is the bottleneck; Tancredo Neves runs at weekend pace
Ciudad del Este to Asunción 327 km 4 h 30 min to 5 h No border: the event barely changes the driving time
Asunción to Ciudad del Este on 8/12 327 km on PY02 and PY07 4 h 30 min to 5 h PY02 runs through Caacupé on the Virgin’s day: leave before dawn

Times are door to door, with a private driver and vehicle. The road to Asunción is the same as the way out: Route PY07 to Coronel Oviedo, then PY02.

Details for each leg are on Transfers Ciudad del Este – Foz do Iguaçu, on Transfers Ciudad del Este – Puerto de Iguazú and, if you are continuing to the capital, on Transfers Ciudad del Este – Asunción, from USD 347 per vehicle in a sedan for up to three passengers.

How far ahead to book

It is not about price, which is fixed before you book. It is about timing: the early departures go first.

  • 19 to 22 November: book as soon as you have your date. It is the most requested window of the year, and the 6 am departure on Friday 20 is the first to fill.
  • All Souls’ weekend (31/10 to 2/11): two weeks ahead is still workable, but secure the Monday return early.
  • 27 November: a week ahead is usually enough. It is a busy working day, not a holiday.
  • 8 December, from Asunción: book with a pre-dawn departure agreed, to get through Caacupé ahead of the pilgrimage traffic.
  • Christmas and New Year: two to three weeks ahead, especially if you are going on from Ciudad del Este to Puerto Iguazú or Asunción, which are longer legs.
  • How to lock it in: a 30% deposit secures the date and time. The balance is paid on the day; we quote in US dollars and also accept guaraníes, Brazilian reais and Argentine pesos.

When it makes sense to call us, and when it does not

We are a private transport company. On Black Friday a car does not skip the queue: it waits on the same bridge as everyone else. What it buys you is something else.

It makes sense

  • There are three or more of you and you will come back loaded: the price is per vehicle, not per passenger.
  • You are chaining Ciudad del Este with Puerto Iguazú or Asunción on the same day and do not want to change taxis at a border.
  • You have a flight or coach afterwards and need someone to plan the return around the queue, not the clock.
  • You do not want to drive in central Ciudad del Este on an event day or hunt for parking.
  • You are a group: the Mercedes Sprinter takes 8 to 14 people and keeps three cars out of the same queue.

It does not

  • You are staying near the bridge in Foz and buying little: walking across does not depend on the car queue.
  • You are travelling alone, with no luggage, on the tightest budget: local transport will do.
  • You expect a transfer to cross faster than other cars: there is no special lane for us.
  • You want shop or product recommendations: that is not our job, and we do not pretend it is.
  • You only want to go in and out on the afternoon of the 20th with no flexibility: in any vehicle, that is the worst moment of the year to cross.

What to confirm before you set off

The event dates belong to the Ciudad del Este Chamber of Commerce and Services, not to us. They are published on the official site and were declared of national interest, but an event this size can adjust its hours. Check blackfridayoficial.com.py in the week of your trip.

The rules for each bridge belong to Brazil’s Receita Federal and Paraguay’s National Customs Directorate. The Integration Bridge clearance has changed twice in less than a year; if you read that cars can now use it, confirm the act in force before changing your route.

What does not change is distance. The 20 km between Ciudad del Este and Foz remain 20 km, and the 327 km to Asunción too. The variable is the queue, and that is what decides the departure time we will agree with you.

Frequently asked questions

What people actually ask us on WhatsApp before Black Friday in Ciudad del Este.

When is Black Friday in Ciudad del Este in 2026?

From Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 November 2026, 8 am to 6 pm, according to the official site blackfridayoficial.com.py and the Ciudad del Este Chamber of Commerce and Services, checked on 14 October 2026.

Is it the same day as Black Friday in the US?

No. The US date, also used by Brazilian retailers, is Friday 27 November. The official event in Ciudad del Este runs a week earlier, around the Brazilian Black Consciousness holiday on Friday 20. Some shops run their own promotions on other dates, but the organised event is 19 to 22 November.

Why is it timed to a Brazilian holiday?

Because most shoppers in Ciudad del Este come from Brazil across the Friendship Bridge. Black Consciousness Day became a national holiday in Brazil under Law 14.759/2023, and in 2026 it falls on Friday 20 November, creating a long weekend in the middle of the event.

Which day is the Friendship Bridge at its worst?

Friday 20 November 2026, a national holiday in Brazil in the middle of the event. In the 2025 edition the first two days had the most pedestrians crossing into Paraguay, according to Receita Federal data cited by Brasilturis.

What time should I cross on Black Friday?

Going in from Foz, before 7 am, so you arrive when the circuit opens at 8 am. Coming back to Brazil, in the early afternoon, before the wave that builds with the 6 pm closing. If you are late, waiting an hour or two on the Paraguayan side often gets you back at the same time.

How long does Ciudad del Este to Foz do Iguaçu take on Black Friday?

On a normal day it is about 20 km and 30 minutes to 1 hour. On peak days we do not publish a fixed figure because it depends on the queue that day and hour. As a public reference, on Black Friday 2023 TNH1 reported queues of about 2.5 km and waits of two to three hours at peak times.

Is the queue worse going in or coming back?

Coming back into Brazil. Going in, the queue spreads over the morning; coming back, everyone leaves near the 6 pm closing and also goes through the Receita Federal inspection on the Brazilian side with loaded cars.

Can I use the Integration Bridge to avoid the queue?

Not by car. Under Executive Declaratory Act SRRF09 No. 19, published on 3 August 2026, it is cleared for empty cargo vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, Foz to Presidente Franco city buses, scheduled international coaches and charter coaches not ending in Foz or Ciudad del Este. Private cars and transfers are not on the list.

How far ahead should I book a transfer?

For 19 to 22 November, as soon as you have your date: early departures fill first. For 27 November, a week is usually enough. For Christmas and New Year, two to three weeks. A 30% deposit locks the date.

Do you run Ciudad del Este to Puerto Iguazú on those days?

Yes. On a normal day it is 30 to 40 km and 45 minutes to 1 h 30, crossing the Friendship Bridge and then the Tancredo Neves Bridge into Argentina. On Black Friday the first bridge is the bottleneck, so we set the time around that queue.

Is December busy too?

Yes, but differently. There is no four-day event; there is end-of-year shopping and holiday travel. The peaks are the Christmas long weekend (Friday 25) and the New Year one (Friday 1 January), especially the Sunday return.

Does the 8 December holiday affect the drive from Asunción?

It affects the road, not the bridge. The Day of the Virgin of Caacupé is a national holiday in Paraguay, on a Tuesday in 2026, and the PY02 highway runs through Caacupé. For that day we agree a pre-dawn departure or suggest another date.

How much is a transfer from Asunción to Ciudad del Este?

From USD 347 per vehicle in a sedan for up to three passengers, or USD 539 for a return trip booked together. Minivan for up to seven: USD 397 and USD 672. Mercedes Sprinter for 8 to 14: USD 858. It is 327 km, 4 h 30 min to 5 h, with no border. The Ciudad del Este to Foz leg is quoted by day and hour.

How do I book and pay?

Send us the day, starting point, number of people and where you are going next on WhatsApp. We reply with a fixed price per vehicle; a 30% deposit locks the date and time. We quote in US dollars and also accept guaraníes, Brazilian reais and Argentine pesos.

Pick the day by the queue, not the discount

In 2026, the Black Friday that fills the Friendship Bridge is 19 to 22 November, with Friday 20 as the hardest day of the year. If you can, go on the Thursday or the Sunday, cross before 7 am and come back in the early afternoon. If you cannot choose, leave the margin on the return and book early: the departure time is the one thing you can secure in advance.

Event dates and hours come from blackfridayoficial.com.py and the declaration by Paraguay’s Chamber of Deputies; Brazilian holidays from Ministerial Order MGI 11.460; the 8 December holiday from Paraguay’s official calendar as published by ABC Color; the Integration Bridge clearance from ADE SRRF09 No. 19 as reported by Diário do Transporte; the 2025 figures from Receita Federal data cited by Brasilturis; the 2023 queue from TNH1. All checked on 14 October 2026. Our times are measured on our own services and prices are per vehicle, in US dollars, from our August 2026 rate card.
