Ciudad del Este to Foz do Iguaçu: how the crossing works and how long it takes
Ciudad del Este and Foz do Iguaçu are about 20 km apart, and our transfer takes 30 minutes to 1 hour. What stretches that is not the distance but the queue at the border controls on the Friendship Bridge, and that queue follows a pattern.
The short answer
Two cities in two countries, one bridge between them. The bridge itself takes minutes. What decides your day is the time you leave, whether it is a Saturday, and how much luggage is in the boot.
| Distance | About 20 km from downtown Ciudad del Este to central Foz do Iguaçu, door to door |
| Off-peak time | 30 minutes to 1 hour in our transfer, including both border controls |
| When it jams | Paraguay into Brazil from mid-afternoon, when day shoppers head back |
| Worst days | Saturdays, the day before public holidays and school holiday season |
| What can cross | On foot, private car, motorbike, taxi, van and private transfer. Charter buses and rental cars have their own rules |
| The second bridge | The Integration Bridge opened in December 2025 but does not take private cars yet: since 3 August 2026 only empty lorries and some bus categories |
| Luggage | Sedan for 1 to 3 people, minivan up to 7, Sprinter for 8 to 14, no extra charge within the vehicle’s capacity |
| Coming from Asunción | Foz do Iguaçu is 340 km away, 5 to 6 h with the border, from USD 417 per vehicle by sedan |
Two countries, twenty kilometres
If you are new to the region, the geography is the first surprise. Ciudad del Este in Paraguay and Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil face each other across the Paraná River, joined by the Friendship Bridge (Ponte da Amizade in Portuguese, Puente de la Amistad in Spanish). From downtown Ciudad del Este to central Foz is about 20 km.
Most people who ask us about this trip have something on a clock in Brazil: a flight from Foz do Iguaçu airport, a ticket for the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls, a long-distance bus, or simply a hotel booked in Foz after a day in Paraguay. So the useful question is not how far it is, but how much margin to leave.
In our transfer between Ciudad del Este and Foz do Iguaçu we work with 30 minutes to 1 hour. When it takes longer, the cause is the queue at the bridge, not the road. According to Brazilian Federal Revenue figures published by the newspaper Bem Paraná (checked on 12 October 2026), around 16.4 million vehicles and 37.7 million people pass through the bridge’s customs post every year. The bridge opened on 27 March 1965 and has one lane each way.
Passports, entry stamps and border office hours are covered in our guide to the Brazil-Paraguay border. This post is about the trip itself: how long it takes, when it jams, and what you can cross in.
The route from Ciudad del Este to Foz, step by step
The same run we do every day from a hotel or mall in Ciudad del Este. In this direction the control that matters is the Brazilian one.
- 1
Pick-up in Ciudad del Este
At your hotel, mall or any address you give us. No meeting point and no other passengers.
- 2
Leaving the downtown area
The bridge approach starts right next to the shopping district. This is where the queue into Brazil forms at peak times, before you even see the river.
- 3
Paraguayan exit control
Day visitors often pass straight through. If you have been travelling inside Paraguay or are continuing your trip, you may need to get an exit stamp.
- 4
Over the Paraná
One lane each way and no hard shoulder. If the queue stops here, there is no way out of it, which is why your departure time is the key decision.
- 5
Brazilian entry control
Brazil’s Federal Revenue can pull vehicles aside for a luggage check. If you are travelling on into Brazil or flying out of Foz, your immigration entry needs to be in order.
- 6
Foz do Iguaçu
The bridge feeds straight onto the BR-277 into town. We drop you at your hotel, the bus station, the airport or wherever you need.
Vehicles and booking conditions for this route are on our page for transfers Ciudad del Este – Foz do Iguaçu.
Why it is sometimes half an hour and sometimes much longer
The queue is not random. It has a direction and a time of day, and knowing the pattern saves you an afternoon sitting on the bridge.
| Situation | Direction that jams | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weekday morning | Into Brazil, usually moving reasonably | The best time to cross from Ciudad del Este to Foz |
| Mid-afternoon onwards | Paraguay into Brazil | Day shoppers all head back at once. Avoid this slot if you have a flight |
| Saturday | Both directions | The busiest shopping day. Go early or pick another day |
| Eve of a holiday, school holidays | Both, peaking into Brazil | Leave a generous margin, especially with a flight or a tour booked |
| Customs operation | Usually into Brazil | Impossible to predict. It is why we quote this leg by day and time |
| Event or closure on the bridge | Either | Your driver tells you on WhatsApp before you set off |
The 30 minutes to 1 hour is our published travel time between Ciudad del Este and Foz do Iguaçu. In the peak slots above it can run well over 1 hour, and nobody can guarantee it: neither we nor anyone else controls the bridge queue.
The practical rule: if you have a flight from Foz, plan your departure from Ciudad del Este around the worst case, not the best. Crossing in the morning and waiting in Foz beats crossing in the afternoon and arriving just in time.
What you can cross in
The bridge takes almost everything, but not on the same terms. Bus rules changed more than once in 2026.
| Vehicle | Can it cross? | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| On foot | Yes | There is a pedestrian walkway. Fine without bags, long and hot with suitcases |
| Private car | Yes | Carry the vehicle papers. Customs checks are possible on the Brazilian side |
| Rental car | Depends on the company | Many contracts do not allow leaving the country. Get it in writing |
| Motorbike and moto-taxi | Yes | Quick, but useless with suitcases |
| Taxi | Depends on the driver | Not all drivers will cross. Agree before you get in |
| Shopping charter bus | With changing restrictions | A ban announced for 19 January 2026 was suspended; check the current rule |
| Private transfer | Yes | Sedan, minivan or Sprinter, with a driver who knows both controls |
The suspension of the charter bus ban on the Friendship Bridge was reported by Diário do Transporte on 14 January 2026, checked on 12 October 2026. Rules for freight and tourist vehicles are set by Brazil’s Federal Revenue and can change by an act published in the Official Gazette.
What about the new Integration Bridge?
For a private car, nothing has changed yet. The Integration Bridge (Ponte da Integração) between Presidente Franco and Foz do Iguaçu opened on 19 December 2025 and runs on a provisional basis, according to Bem Paraná (checked on 12 October 2026). Full opening is expected between late 2026 and early 2027, once the access roads on the Paraguayan side are finished.
The rule in force is Executive Declaratory Act SRRF09 no. 19, published in Brazil’s Official Gazette on 3 August 2026 and reported by Diário do Transporte. It allows on the new bridge empty lorries over 3.5 tonnes, buses on the Foz-Presidente Franco urban line, scheduled international bus lines, and tourist charters whose final destination is neither Foz do Iguaçu nor Ciudad del Este. Crossing hours are set by the Federal Revenue customs office in Foz.
Cars, vans and taxis are not on the list. In practice, anyone driving from Ciudad del Este to Foz still uses the Friendship Bridge. The indirect gain is that some lorries and buses no longer compete for that single lane.
When the new bridge opens fully, the route may change and we will update this post.
Luggage and shopping at the crossing
Heading into Brazil, the control that matters is Federal Revenue customs, and luggage is what they look at.
- Space per vehicle. The sedan takes 1 to 3 passengers, the Hyundai H1 minivan up to 7 and the Mercedes Sprinter 8 to 14. Suitcases and shopping go at no extra charge within the vehicle’s capacity. Two people with a lot of boxes are often better off in the minivan.
- Customs checks. Your vehicle may be selected. Keep receipts handy and do not hide anything between bags: the driver cannot answer for what a passenger carries.
- Shopping allowances. How much you can bring in tax free depends on where you are heading. Our post on Paraguay customs and shopping allowances explains it.
- Going on to Argentina. Many people pass through Foz only to reach Puerto Iguazú. If that is your plan, go direct: transfers Ciudad del Este – Puerto de Iguazú, 30 to 40 km and two borders.
- Flying out of Foz. Arrive with suitcases packed and purchases in their boxes. Opening bags in the bridge queue is time you do not have.
When to book us and when not to
We are private transport. The bridge queue is the same for everyone, and we do not sell a shortcut that does not exist.
Book us when
- You have a flight, tour or bus on a fixed time in Foz and want someone watching the queue and picking the departure time.
- There are three or more of you with luggage: the price is per vehicle, not per passenger.
- You are coming from Asunción and want to carry on to Foz without changing vehicle: 340 km, 5 to 6 h with the border.
- Your rental car is not allowed to leave Paraguay.
- You would rather not haggle with a taxi willing to cross, or drag suitcases over the bridge on foot.
Do not book us when
- You are alone, with no luggage and no rush: walking across or taking the urban bus costs far less.
- You have your own car with papers in order and cross on a weekday morning.
- You think a transfer skips the queue: it does not. Our driver crosses the same bridge.
- You want a two-hour round trip on a Saturday afternoon: with or without us, it does not work.
- Your goal is the Argentine side of the falls and you have nothing to do in Foz: go straight to Puerto Iguazú.
How to check before you go
Vehicle rules on both bridges are set by Brazil’s Federal Revenue and changed several times this year, especially for buses. Before crossing, check the Federal Revenue website and the notices of the customs office in Foz do Iguaçu, which publishes crossing hours and conditions.
For the queue on the day, the best information comes from people who are there. Our drivers cross every day and, once you book, we tell you on WhatsApp if it is worth leaving earlier.
If your trip runs the other way, or you end up in Ciudad del Este and head on to the capital, see transfers Ciudad del Este – Asunción: 327 km, 4 h 30 min to 5 h, from USD 347 per vehicle.
What does not change: it is about 20 km. The queue is in charge, and the only way to deal with it is to choose your time well.
Frequently asked questions
What people actually ask us on WhatsApp before crossing from Ciudad del Este to Foz.
How long does it take from Ciudad del Este to Foz do Iguaçu?
In our transfer, 30 minutes to 1 hour door to door. The bridge takes minutes; the time goes on the border queues. At peak times, especially into Brazil from mid-afternoon and on Saturdays, it can run well over 1 hour.
How far is Ciudad del Este from Foz do Iguaçu?
About 20 km from downtown Ciudad del Este to central Foz do Iguaçu, across the Friendship Bridge over the Paraná River.
What is the best time to cross into Brazil?
A weekday morning. The Paraguay to Brazil direction is the one that jams, and it gets worse from mid-afternoon when day shoppers head back.
I have a flight from Foz. How much margin should I leave?
Plan for the worst case, not the best. If you can, cross in the morning and wait in Foz. Leaving Ciudad del Este on a Saturday afternoon for an evening flight is the riskiest combination.
Can I walk across the Friendship Bridge?
Yes, there is a pedestrian walkway. It works without luggage. With suitcases or shopping, heat and a queue, it becomes a long walk.
Can I take a rental car across?
It depends on the contract. Many rental companies do not allow leaving the country, and insurance may not cover the car in Brazil. Get written permission first.
Do taxis in Ciudad del Este go to Foz?
Some do and some do not; it depends on the driver. Agree on the crossing and the fare before you get in.
Can I drive over the new Integration Bridge?
Not yet. Under the Federal Revenue act published on 3 August 2026, the new bridge takes empty lorries over 3.5 tonnes, Foz-Presidente Franco urban buses, scheduled international bus lines and charters whose final destination is outside Foz and Ciudad del Este. Cars are not included. Full opening is expected between late 2026 and early 2027.
Will customs check my luggage entering Brazil?
They may. Brazil’s Federal Revenue can select vehicles for inspection. Keep receipts at hand. The driver is not responsible for what a passenger carries.
How much luggage fits in the transfer?
The sedan takes 1 to 3 passengers, the Hyundai H1 minivan up to 7 and the Mercedes Sprinter 8 to 14. Luggage goes at no extra charge within the vehicle’s capacity. If you are carrying a lot, tell us when you book.
How much is a transfer from Ciudad del Este to Foz?
This leg has no published price because the duration depends on the bridge queue. We quote by day and time, always per vehicle rather than per passenger. Send us the address, date and number of people on WhatsApp.
Can I go straight from Asunción to Foz do Iguaçu?
Yes. It is 340 km on routes PY02 and PY07 to Ciudad del Este and then the Friendship Bridge, 5 to 6 h including the border. By sedan from USD 417 per vehicle, or USD 707 return; minivan USD 497 or USD 847; Sprinter USD 892.
Does a private transfer skip the bridge queue?
No. There is no dedicated lane. What the driver does is pick the time, watch the queue on the day and tell you if you should leave earlier.
Can I go from Ciudad del Este to Puerto Iguazú without stopping in Foz?
Yes, passing through Brazil in transit. It is 30 to 40 km and two borders, 45 minutes to 1 h 30 depending on queues and immigration.
The bridge is short, the timing is everything
About 20 km and, off peak, 30 minutes to 1 hour. Cross in the morning, avoid mid-afternoon and Saturdays if you have something timed in Foz, and check that your vehicle is allowed across. If you would like us to handle it, send the date, the address and how many of you there are.
Traffic and opening figures for the Friendship Bridge come from Brazil’s Federal Revenue, as published by Bem Paraná; the Integration Bridge rules come from Executive Declaratory Act SRRF09 no. 19, as reported by Diário do Transporte; the suspension of the charter bus ban was also reported by Diário do Transporte. All checked on 12 October 2026. These are not our figures and can change without notice. Our distances, times and prices are from our August 2026 rate card, per vehicle, in US dollars.
