The shopping malls of Ciudad del Este
Almost all of Ciudad del Este trade fits into two avenues, and the difference between a good shopping day and a day lost in traffic is knowing which mall sits where. This guide puts each one on the map.
The short answer: where each mall is
Trade in Ciudad del Este is concentrated in the microcentro, between the Friendship Bridge and Avenida Monsenor Rodriguez, and almost all of it is walkable. The exception is the Avenida San Blas axis, which sits outside the microcentro on the way out towards Minga Guazu and the road to Asuncion. The addresses below are the ones each mall publishes.

How the city is laid out
Before the names, the geography. Ciudad del Este does not have a mall in every neighbourhood: it has one dense commercial core and one axis running out of it.
- The microcentro: it starts at the Paraguayan end of the Friendship Bridge and runs along Av. Monsenor Rodriguez and Av. Adrian Jara. Almost every mall and most of the street trade is here.
- Av. Dr. Luis Maria Argana: the first avenue after the bridge. Shopping Paris is on it, about 300 metres from the border post.
- Av. Monsenor Rodriguez: the main commercial artery. Shopping del Este and Monalisa are both on it.
- The Av. San Blas axis: it leaves the microcentro towards Minga Guazu, Guarani airport and the road to Asuncion. Shopping Zuni sits on that axis.
- What that means in practice: if you cross the bridge on foot, the microcentro is a walk. If you want to add Zuni, or you are arriving from Asuncion, you need a vehicle.
This is why so many people lose the day: they pick malls from a brand list instead of from an address, and end up crossing the city twice.
The malls, one by one
Each row is what the mall publishes about itself. Where there is no published official address we give the area and do not invent the number.

Shopping China has three addresses in the country: Ciudad del Este, Salto del Guaira and Pedro Juan Caballero. The Ciudad del Este one is the branch that operates inside Shopping Paris.
Opening hours, which are what ruins the trip
This is the fact that surprises visitors most.
Trade in Ciudad del Este opens early and closes early. It does not work like a capital-city mall that opens at ten in the morning and closes at ten at night: here a good share of the shops are already pulling the shutters down when you think the day is just starting.
Two malls publish their hours on their own website. Shopping China states Monday to Sunday, 07:00 to 20:00. Shopping del Este states that its shops and food court run Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 17:00, closed on Sundays and open on public holidays; its casino keeps its own, longer schedule.
The others do not publish official hours at a stable address, which is why we give no number: what circulates on travel blogs changes from one year to the next and is no use for planning. Confirming takes two minutes: search the mall by name on a map, open its listing and check the hours for the weekday you are going, or call the phone number shown there.
The rule of thumb we give passengers: arrive in the morning. A shopping day in Ciudad del Este that starts at 2 pm is half a shopping day. One that starts at 8 am gets twice as much done and catches an emptier bridge on the way back.
How to order the day between the malls
The order that works when you arrive from Foz do Iguacu, which is how most people arrive.

Cross early
The queue at the Friendship Bridge is the one number nobody can predict. Crossing before 9 am tends to be a different experience. It is about 20 km between Ciudad del Este and Foz do Iguacu and the trip takes 30 minutes to 1 hour, almost entirely depending on the queue.

Start with what is closest to the bridge
Shopping Paris is about 300 metres from the border post, and Shopping China is inside it. If you only have half a day, that pair covers most shopping lists without you moving at all.

Walk up Monsenor Rodriguez
Shopping del Este and Monalisa are both on that avenue. It is a walk, not a transfer, but with bags in your hands and real heat the walk changes size.

Leave Zuni to whoever has a vehicle
It is on Av. San Blas, outside the microcentro. Worth it if you already have a car and are leaving the city that way, not worth it if you crossed on foot.

Head back before late afternoon
Trade closes early and the bridge fills up on the way out. Leaving at 4 pm and leaving at 6 pm are not the same trip.

Bags go in the vehicle, not in your arms
This is the real reason people hire a car with a driver in Ciudad del Este: it is not the transport, it is not having to carry everything all day.

Worth it
- You are arriving from Asuncion or travelling on after the shopping
- There are more than two stops in different parts of the city
- You are buying volume and do not want to carry a single bag
- You are travelling with children, with older relatives or in a group
- You want to add Itaipu or the Monday Falls the same day
- You do not speak Spanish and do not want to negotiate every ride
Not worth it
- You crossed on foot from Foz for one specific purchase
- You are only going to Shopping Paris and back, all 300 metres from the bridge
- You are already staying in the microcentro and walking everywhere
- It is a two-hour visit to collect something you ordered
- You have your own car and know the traffic and the parking in the city
If your case is in the right-hand column, do not book anything: walk. We would rather say so than sell you a transfer you do not need.
What to know before you go in
Practical things nobody mentions that change the day.
- Currency: the country currency is the guarani, but the Brazilian real and the US dollar circulate normally in border trade. Ask what exchange rate the shop applies before closing the purchase.
- Language: the country languages are Spanish and Guarani, and in Ciudad del Este trade many people also serve customers in Portuguese.
- Duty-free allowance: the value you may bring back is set by your own country customs authority and changes over time. That is why we publish no figure: check the official customs website of your country before travelling, because that is what counts at the control point.
- Receipts: keep the invoice for everything you buy. Without them you have no way to show the value of what you are carrying.
- Heat: summer in Ciudad del Este is heavy and the microcentro has little shade. Water and a morning schedule solve half the problem.
- Traffic: the streets around the bridge jam at certain hours, and that depends less on the day of the week than people assume.

How to get to Ciudad del Este
The two starting points almost everyone uses.
From Foz do Iguacu. It is about 20 kilometres and the trip takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour, depending almost entirely on the queue at the Friendship Bridge. We run that leg as a transfer between Ciudad del Este and Foz do Iguacu, and it is quoted separately because the time of day and the direction of the crossing change how long the service takes.
From Asuncion. It is 327 kilometres on Route PY02 to Coronel Oviedo and then the PY07, between 4 h 30 min and 5 h of driving. It is paved the whole way and crosses no border. By air. Guarani airport, in Minga Guazu, is about 30 km from the centre of Ciudad del Este. Add the transfer on both ends of the trip before comparing it with the road.

Can you walk from one mall to another?
In the microcentro, yes. Shopping Paris, Shopping del Este, Monalisa and Vendome are all within walking distance of each other and of the bridge itself. Shopping Zuni is on Av. San Blas, outside the microcentro, and for that one you need a vehicle.
How long does it take from Foz do Iguacu to the malls?
It is about 20 kilometres and the trip takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour. The distance is short and what varies is the queue at the Friendship Bridge, which can take longer than the rest of the journey put together.
What is the best time to cross the bridge?
Early in the morning. There is no guaranteed time, because the queue depends on the traffic that day, but crossing before 9 am is usually very different from crossing at midday, and so is heading back before late afternoon.
Do I need a vehicle to go shopping in Ciudad del Este?
If you crossed on foot and are only going to Shopping Paris, no. If there are several stops, if you are buying volume or if you are arriving from Asuncion, yes: the value is in not carrying bags all day and not looking for transport on every leg.
How much is a transfer from Asuncion to Ciudad del Este?
