The short answer

Foz do Iguaçu International Airport (IGU) is on highway BR-469 at km 16.5, between the city centre and Iguaçu National Park, in the corner of Brazil where it meets Paraguay and Argentina. That location shapes everything: Argentina is close, the bridge to Paraguay is across town, and Asunción is half a day’s drive.

Where the airport is, and why it matters

Foz do Iguaçu sits at the Triple Frontier, where Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina meet on two rivers. Most people who land here are not staying in Foz itself. They are heading to the Argentinian side of Iguazu Falls in Puerto Iguazú, across the Friendship Bridge to Ciudad del Este in Paraguay, or on by road to Asunción, Paraguay’s capital. If you are reading this from outside South America, the useful thing to know is that each of those is a separate international border crossing, and the airport is closer to some than to others.

Foz do Iguaçu International Airport, code IGU, opened in 1974 and sits on highway BR-469 at km 16.5. The BR-469 is the road from the city out to Iguaçu National Park, and the airport is about halfway along it, roughly 13 km from downtown Foz and a few kilometres from the park entrance.

In practice the airport is on the south side of town, the side of the falls and of Argentina. The Friendship Bridge to Ciudad del Este is on the opposite side, where the BR-277 leaves the city. To reach Paraguay you cross the whole of Foz before you even join the bridge queue. To reach Argentina you do not: the turn-off for the Tancredo Neves Bridge is at the start of the BR-469.

This post does not weigh up whether to fly into Foz or into Asunción; that is a separate comparison with its own post. Here we assume your ticket is booked and you are landing at Foz. What matters is how to get out of the airport, how long each option takes, and which border control you meet on each leg.

The four ways out of the airport, with distances and times

City-to-city distances and times come from our August 2026 rate sheet. The airport-to-downtown distance is from a public source checked on 18 October 2026.

Destination Distance Time Border on the way
Downtown Foz do Iguaçu About 13 km Depends on traffic on Avenida das Cataratas None
Ciudad del Este, Paraguay Around 20 km from Foz to Ciudad del Este, plus the airport-to-town stretch 30 min to 1 h city to city, depending on the bridge queue Brazilian exit and Paraguayan entry at the Friendship Bridge
Puerto Iguazú, Argentina Close to the airport via the Tancredo Neves Bridge; from Ciudad del Este it is 30 to 40 km From Ciudad del Este, 45 min to 1 h 30 Brazilian exit and Argentine entry at the Tancredo Neves Bridge
Asunción, Paraguay 340 km 5 to 6 h including the border Friendship Bridge; after that, Paraguayan highway with no further border

The 20 km and 30 minutes to 1 hour between Foz and Ciudad del Este are measured city to city. From the airport, add the stretch into central Foz. Real journey time depends almost entirely on the Friendship Bridge queue, which changes with the day of the week and the hour.

Guides quote anything from 12 to 16 km between the airport and downtown, because each measures to a different point in the city. We use the 13 km given on the airport’s public Wikipedia page, checked on 18 October 2026, as an order of magnitude rather than an exact figure.

From the airport to Ciudad del Este, step by step

This is the leg most travellers ask about. Distance does not decide the time; the bridge does.

  1. 1

    Arrivals and bags

If you arrive on a domestic flight within Brazil there is no immigration at Foz: you cleared it at your first Brazilian airport. On a direct international flight, Brazilian immigration is handled in the terminal.

  2. 2

    The stretch through Foz

From the airport to the Friendship Bridge you cross the city from south to north. Guides leave this out when they say Foz and Ciudad del Este are 20 km apart.

  3. 3

    The bridge queue

This is what sets the day. At quiet times the crossing is quick; on a Saturday morning, before a Brazilian holiday or around Black Friday, the queue can double the total time.

  4. 4

    The controls

Brazilian exit at one end, Paraguayan entry at the other. Day shoppers who return the same day move within the border zone; anyone travelling on into Paraguay must formally register their entry.

  5. 5

    Arrival

Ciudad del Este begins right after the Paraguayan end of the bridge. The main shopping district is a few minutes away.

How the crossing works in detail, with peak hours and the best way to do it, is in our post on Ciudad del Este to Foz do Iguaçu, so we will not repeat it here. The point on this side is simple: leave slack. Anyone who books a meeting in Ciudad del Este an hour after landing usually arrives late.

We run this leg with drivers who know the bridge procedures. Details of the service are on transfers Ciudad del Este – Foz do Iguaçu. There is no published price because the duration depends on the queue; we quote by day and by flight time.

From the airport to Puerto Iguazú and the Argentinian side

For Argentina, geography is on your side. The airport is on the BR-469, and the turn-off for the Tancredo Neves Bridge over the Iguazú River, which links Foz do Iguaçu with Puerto Iguazú, is at the start of that same road. You do not need to go through central Foz or anywhere near the Friendship Bridge.

That means one border: Brazilian exit and Argentine entry at the Tancredo Neves posts. Someone reaching Puerto Iguazú from Ciudad del Este crosses two: Paraguay into Brazil, then Brazil into Argentina. That is why our Ciudad del Este to Puerto Iguazú route is 30 to 40 km and takes 45 minutes to 1 hour 30, subject to traffic and both controls.

The Tancredo Neves Bridge has queues too. In January 2025 the Misiones press reported a line of almost 3 km at the height of the summer season. Outside the holidays the crossing is usually much quicker, but nobody honest promises a fixed time.

If your plan is to land at Foz, stay in Puerto Iguazú and spend a day in Ciudad del Este, that is a common and sensible itinerary. The leg between the two is on transfers Ciudad del Este – Puerto de Iguazú, priced the same way: by day, because there are two bridges in the way.

From Foz airport to Asunción

It is 340 km on routes PY07 and PY02 once you are over the Friendship Bridge. Prices from our August 2026 rate sheet, per vehicle, not per passenger.

Vehicle Passengers One way Return
Sedan 1 to 3 USD 417 USD 707
Minivan Up to 7 USD 497 USD 847
Mercedes Sprinter 8 to 14 USD 892 On request

Prices include fuel, tolls and the driver, with luggage at no extra cost within the vehicle’s capacity. A 30% deposit secures the date. We quote in US dollars.

The route runs over the Friendship Bridge, through Ciudad del Este, then Caaguazú, Coronel Oviedo, Caacupé and San Lorenzo into Greater Asunción. Allow 5 to 6 hours including the border, and we stop wherever you like on the way.

If you land in the afternoon, an honest question: should you set off straight for Asunción? With 5 to 6 hours of road, a flight landing at 4 pm gets you to Asunción in the small hours. Many travellers prefer to sleep in Foz or Ciudad del Este and leave early. Route details are on transfers Foz do Iguaçu – Asunción.

How we match the pickup to your flight

What we ask for so the driver is at arrivals at the right moment, not an hour early or an hour late.

  • Flight number and date. That lets the driver follow the actual arrival, not just the time on your ticket.
  • How many people and how many bags. That sets the vehicle: sedan up to 3, minivan up to 7, Sprinter for 8 to 14.
  • The exact destination. A hotel in Ciudad del Este, an address in Puerto Iguazú or in Asunción. It changes the border and the time.
  • Whether it is an international flight. Immigration in the terminal adds time between landing and walking out; the driver allows for it.
  • Documents to hand. Every passenger needs their own document at each bridge. What Paraguay asks of your nationality is in our entry requirements post.
  • Tell us about delays on WhatsApp. If your flight changes time or day, one message sorts it. It is the simplest way to avoid missing each other.

When to book us and when not to

We are a private transfer company that prices per vehicle. For some legs out of Foz airport that is the best option; for others it is not.

Worth it

  • You are going straight to Ciudad del Este and do not want to deal with a taxi, a change of vehicle and the bridge queue on your own.
  • There are three or more of you: the price is per vehicle, so the USD 417 to Asunción covers one passenger or three.
  • You are heading to Asunción with luggage or children and want to leave the airport without changing buses on the way.
  • You are going to Puerto Iguazú and would rather someone who knows the border handled the crossing.
  • You speak neither Portuguese nor Spanish and want to reach your hotel without negotiating anything.

Not worth it

  • You are staying in central Foz do Iguaçu: it is about 13 km, and the airport taxi rank or the city bus will do. Local guides mention bus line 120 between the airport and the urban terminal; check the timetable on the day.
  • You are going to Iguaçu National Park straight after landing: the entrance is a few kilometres from the airport, no long-distance transfer needed.
  • You are travelling alone, in no hurry and on a tight budget to Asunción: the scheduled bus takes 6 to 8 hours with a change, but costs a fraction.
  • You have not bought your ticket yet and your final stop is Asunción: flying straight there may make more sense. That is a different comparison, covered in our post on choosing the right airport.

Immigration on each leg

Foz airport mostly handles domestic Brazilian flights. If you connect through São Paulo or another Brazilian city, you clear Brazilian immigration there and walk straight out at Foz. If you arrive on a direct international flight, the Federal Police handle immigration in the terminal.

After the airport, the control is at whichever bridge you cross. For Ciudad del Este, at the Friendship Bridge: Brazilian exit at one end, Paraguayan entry at the other. For Puerto Iguazú, at the Tancredo Neves Bridge: Brazilian exit and Argentine entry. For Asunción, only the Friendship Bridge; after that the road to the capital has no other border.

The rule that confuses people is the border zone. Day shoppers who go to Ciudad del Este and return the same day move within the frontier area; anyone continuing to Asunción or anywhere inside Paraguay must formally register their entry. If you are going beyond Ciudad del Este, do not skip the immigration post: if your exit from Brazil is not recorded, you can be fined later.

Accepted documents depend on your nationality, and this is exactly the kind of rule that changes. The details are in our entry requirements and Brazil–Paraguay border posts, and the final word always belongs to each country’s immigration authority.
