A day trip to Paraguay from Iguazu: what really fits in one day

Yes, it fits. Ciudad del Este sits 20 kilometres from Foz do Iguacu and 30 to 40 from Puerto Iguazu, so the driving is the short part of the day. What decides whether the trip works is the border, and that is the part nobody plans for.

The short answer

If you are based in Foz do Iguacu, Paraguay is about half an hour away and a day trip is comfortable. If you are based in Puerto Iguazu, you cross two borders to get there and the same trip needs a longer runway. Either way, the destination for a one-day crossing is Ciudad del Este, not Asuncion.

From Foz do Iguacu About 20 km (12 miles) to Ciudad del Este, 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on border traffic and time of day, over the Friendship Bridge
From Puerto Iguazu 30 to 40 km (19 to 25 miles) depending on the crossing used, 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, with two international borders on the way
What you get Ciudad del Este: the commercial district, the malls, the Itaipu dam on the edge of town and the Parana river front. Enough for a full day, not more
What you do not get Asuncion. It is 327 km and 4 h 30 min to 5 h from Ciudad del Este, so the capital is a separate trip, not an add-on
The real constraint The queue at the bridge, which changes daily. We do not publish waiting times because nobody can predict them honestly
With us Private transfers on both legs. See the Ciudad del Este – Foz do Iguacu transfers and the Ciudad del Este – Puerto de Iguazu transfers
Documents A valid passport for every passenger, and minors with their own documentation. Visa requirements are set by each consulate, not by us

Yes, it fits, and the driving is the short part

The honest answer first: a day trip from Iguazu into Paraguay fits comfortably, and the distance is not what makes it tight. From Foz do Iguacu, Ciudad del Este is approximately 20 kilometres, or 12 miles, and the ride takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour depending on border traffic and the time of day. That is the number on our own Ciudad del Este – Foz do Iguacu transfers page, and it is the same number whether you drive yourself or someone drives you.

From Puerto Iguazu, on the Argentine side, the trip is longer in every sense. It covers 30 to 40 kilometres, 19 to 25 miles, depending on which crossing is used, and takes 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes subject to traffic and immigration procedures. The extra distance is trivial; the extra border is not. You leave Argentina, enter Brazil, then leave Brazil and enter Paraguay, all in the same morning.

So the geography is friendly. What is not friendly is the queue. Two of the busiest land crossings in South America sit within a few kilometres of each other here, and the wait at either of them can be five minutes or it can be an hour and a half. It depends on the day of the week, the exchange rate, the school holidays in Brazil and Argentina, and the hour you pick. We do not publish waiting times, because any number we printed would be wrong by the time you read it.

The one variable you actually control is when you leave. Early departures catch the shortest queues, and that is the single piece of advice worth more than everything else on this page.

The two ways in, side by side

Both start in the Iguazu area and both end in Ciudad del Este. The difference is how many borders sit between you and lunch.

Starting point Distance and time Borders on the way
Foz do Iguacu, Brazil About 20 km (12 miles), 30 minutes to 1 hour One: the Friendship Bridge into Paraguay
Puerto Iguazu, Argentina 30 to 40 km (19 to 25 miles), 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes Two: into Brazil first, then into Paraguay
Asuncion, Paraguay 327 km, 4 h 30 min to 5 h, no border at all None, but it is not a day trip from Iguazu

Distances and times are the ones on our own route pages, measured on the trips we run every week. They assume normal traffic and no exceptional queue at immigration.

The table makes the decision for you. If you are sleeping in Foz do Iguacu, crossing into Paraguay for the day is barely an excursion: it is a short drive and one control post. If you are sleeping in Puerto Iguazu, you are committing to four immigration stops in a single day, two on the way out and two on the way back.

Neither is difficult. But the Argentine base needs a longer runway, and it is the reason we tell guests in Puerto Iguazu to leave before eight in the morning rather than after breakfast.

How the day actually runs

Five steps, in the order they happen. The first two are the ones that decide whether the rest works.

  1. 1

    Leave early, not after breakfast

The queue at the bridges is shortest in the early morning and longest in the middle of the day. Leaving at seven instead of ten can be the difference between a relaxed day and two hours spent staring at a bumper. This is the only variable you control, so use it.

  2. 2

Carry the documents for every crossing

A valid passport for every passenger, and minors with their own documentation. On the Argentine route you present it four times in one day. Visa requirements depend on your nationality and are confirmed by the consulate, weeks in advance, not at the bridge.

  3. 3

Pick one district and stay in it

Ciudad del Este rewards depth, not breadth. The commercial centre near the bridge, the shopping malls, the Itaipu dam on the edge of town: pick one or two and do them properly. Our Ciudad del Este guide walks through what each one is.

  4. 4

Check opening hours before you cross, not after

Shops and malls in Ciudad del Este do not all keep the same hours, and Sundays are quieter than the rest of the week. We do not publish opening times because they vary by shop and change without notice, but it is the one thing worth confirming the day before.

  5. 5

Start back before the afternoon peak

The return queue builds through the late afternoon, when day visitors head home at once. If you have a dinner reservation or a flight the next morning, plan the return for mid-afternoon and treat anything later as a bonus.

There is a sixth step that is not really a step: decide in advance whether you are driving yourself. A rental car booked in Argentina or Brazil often cannot legally cross into Paraguay without paperwork the rental company has to issue, and discovering that at the bridge is a bad way to start the day.

If you would rather not manage any of it, that is what a private transfer is for. The driver knows the crossing, the vehicle paperwork is in order, and you keep the day for the part you came for.

And if you want Asuncion too, it is a separate trip

This is the question we get most often from Iguazu, and the answer is always the same: the capital does not fit in the same day. Here is what it actually costs and takes.

Leg Distance and time Private transfer, per vehicle
Asuncion – Ciudad del Este 327 km, 4 h 30 min to 5 h, no border Sedan USD 347 one way, USD 539 return
Asuncion – Ciudad del Este Same road, larger vehicle Hyundai H1 minivan USD 397 one way, USD 672 return
Asuncion – Ciudad del Este Same road, group vehicle Mercedes Sprinter USD 858
Asuncion – Foz do Iguacu 340 km, 5 to 6 h with the border Sedan USD 417 one way, USD 707 return
Asuncion – Puerto Iguazu 350 km, 5 h 30 min to 6 h 30 min, two borders Sedan USD 447 one way, USD 763 return

Prices are per vehicle in US dollars, current as of August 2026, with fuel, tolls and the driver included. A 30 per cent deposit holds the date and the vehicle, by card, bank transfer, digital wallet or crypto, and forty-eight hours of notice is enough in most cases.

Look at the top row and the bottom row together. Ciudad del Este is on your doorstep from Iguazu; Asuncion is four and a half to five hours beyond it. Trying to do both in a day means nine to ten hours in a vehicle and perhaps ninety minutes on your feet, which is not a trip, it is a transfer with a coffee break.

If Asuncion is genuinely on your list, the fast way is the air: a private flight covers Asuncion to Ciudad del Este in 1 hour 30 minutes for USD 1,099 per aircraft. The numbers and the alternatives are laid out on our Asuncion to Ciudad del Este distance page.

What we publish here, and what we will not

Some of the numbers people want for this trip are not ours to set. Where we do not have certainty, we say how to check instead of guessing.

  • Distances and times. Ours, from the routes we drive every week: 20 km and 30 minutes to 1 hour from Foz do Iguacu, 30 to 40 km and 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes from Puerto Iguazu, 327 km and 4 h 30 min to 5 h from Asuncion.
  • Transfer prices for the short legs. Our Ciudad del Este – Foz do Iguacu and Ciudad del Este – Puerto de Iguazu pages do not publish a fixed fare, because the price depends on the exact pickup point, the hour and the crossing used. Ask on WhatsApp and you get a closed price before you travel. We are not going to invent a number here for you to discover a different one later.
  • Border waiting times. Not published, because they change every day with the calendar, the exchange rate and the hour. What we do instead is leave early.
  • Customs allowances. How much you may bring back is set by the tax authority of the country you return to, not by us, and the figures change. Check the Receita Federal if you are returning to Brazil and the AFIP if you are returning to Argentina, in the month you travel.
  • Shop and mall opening hours. They vary by shop and change without notice. Confirm the day before, and plan around Sunday being quieter.
  • Bus, border taxi and rental fares. Third parties set them and they move. We do not publish prices we do not control.
  • Visa requirements. Set by each consulate, by nationality, and best resolved weeks ahead. A driver cannot fix a document problem at the bridge.

When a private transfer is worth it, and when it is not

Both columns are true. Which one is yours depends on your group, not on our sales pitch.

Worth booking if

  • There are three or more of you and the per-vehicle price splits between everyone.
  • You are based in Puerto Iguazu and face four immigration stops in one day.
  • You are carrying purchases back and do not want to handle them on public transport.
  • You are travelling with children, with elderly parents, or with reduced mobility.
  • You have a flight or a dinner reservation and need the return time to hold.
  • You want a fixed price agreed before you travel rather than a negotiation at each step.

Not worth it if

  • You are staying in Foz do Iguacu, travelling alone, and comfortable with local transport.
  • Your budget is the deciding factor: per person, the local options are far cheaper.
  • You already know the crossing, drive in the region and have your vehicle paperwork in order.
  • You only want to walk across, look around for an hour and come straight back.
  • Your hotel already runs a shuttle that covers the same leg.
  • You are flexible on timing and genuinely do not mind however long the queue takes.

The border is the part nobody plans for

Every complaint we hear about this trip is a border complaint, and almost every one of them comes from the same mistake: treating the crossing as a formality rather than as the main event of the morning. It is not a formality. It is two countries doing their job, at a crossing that handles enormous daily traffic, and it takes as long as it takes.

The practical consequence is that you should budget time, not distance. Twenty kilometres from Foz do Iguacu sounds like twenty minutes, and on a quiet Tuesday morning it nearly is. On a Saturday before a Brazilian holiday, the same twenty kilometres can absorb an hour and a half. Both of those are inside the 30 minutes to 1 hour band we publish, plus the queue that nobody can promise you.

From Puerto Iguazu the maths doubles. Two borders on the way out and two on the way back means four controls, and each one is its own queue. That is why our Ciudad del Este – Puerto de Iguazu transfers page gives a band of 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes rather than a single figure: the honest answer is a range.

If you want the full picture of how the Paraguay-Brazil crossing works before you go, we wrote it up in detail in our guide to the Paraguay-Brazil border and the Friendship Bridge.

When you should not hire us

If you are staying in Foz do Iguacu, travelling alone and happy to use local transport, do not book a private transfer. It is a short, well-served leg that thousands of people do every day, and we would not be adding anything that justifies the difference in price. Saying so costs us a booking and keeps the rest of this page believable.

If your plan is to walk across, spend an hour looking around and come straight back, the same applies. A private vehicle earns its keep on a full day with luggage, purchases or a group. For a ninety-minute look around, it is an expensive way to cross a bridge.

And we are not the right answer if what you actually need is a fixer. Our driver knows the route and the crossing and carries the vehicle paperwork in order, but he does not process your visa, does not answer for your nationality requirements and cannot move you up the queue. Those things are settled by the consulate, in advance.

We are worth it when the arithmetic or the clock turns in our favour: three or more passengers sharing one vehicle, four immigration stops in one day from the Argentine side, shopping to carry home, children, or a return time that has to hold because of a flight. Outside of that, you would be paying for certainty you do not need.

Frequently asked questions

The questions guests actually send us on WhatsApp before crossing into Paraguay for the day.

Can you visit Paraguay in one day from Iguazu?

Yes. Ciudad del Este is approximately 20 kilometres, or 12 miles, from Foz do Iguacu, a 30 minute to 1 hour drive depending on border traffic. From Puerto Iguazu it is 30 to 40 kilometres, 19 to 25 miles, and 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, because the route crosses two international borders instead of one.

How far is Ciudad del Este from Foz do Iguacu?

About 20 kilometres, 12 miles, over the Friendship Bridge. Travel time is usually between 30 minutes and 1 hour, depending on border traffic and the time of day. The drive itself is short; the variable part is the queue at the crossing.

How far is Ciudad del Este from Puerto Iguazu?

Between 30 and 40 kilometres, 19 to 25 miles, depending on which crossing is used, with an average travel time of 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes subject to traffic and immigration procedures. You pass through Brazil on the way, so the trip involves two borders in each direction.

Can I reach Asuncion on a day trip from Iguazu?

No, and we would not recommend trying. Asuncion is 327 kilometres from Ciudad del Este, a 4 h 30 min to 5 h drive on Route PY02 and then PY07. Adding it to a day trip means nine to ten hours in a vehicle. Treat the capital as a separate trip of at least two days.

How much does a transfer from Foz do Iguacu to Ciudad del Este cost?

We do not publish a fixed fare for that leg, because the price depends on the exact pickup point, the hour and the crossing used. Send us the details on WhatsApp and you get a closed price per vehicle before you travel, rather than a number here that might not match your trip.

How much does a transfer from Asuncion to Ciudad del Este cost?

From USD 347 per vehicle in a sedan for up to three passengers, and USD 539 for the return booked together. The Hyundai H1 minivan for up to seven is USD 397 and USD 672, and the Mercedes Sprinter for groups is USD 858. Prices are per vehicle and include fuel, tolls and the driver.

What documents do I need to cross into Paraguay?

A valid passport for every passenger, and minors with their own documentation. Some nationalities need a visa for Paraguay, for Brazil or for both, and that is confirmed by the consulate weeks in advance. On a private transfer, the vehicle and driver paperwork is already in order.

How long is the queue at the Friendship Bridge?

We do not publish waiting times, because they change every day with the calendar, the exchange rate and the hour. What can be controlled is the timing: an early departure catches the shortest queue, which is why our crossings leave first thing in the morning rather than after breakfast.

How much can I bring back through customs?

That is set by the tax authority of the country you return to, not by us, and the figures change. Check the Receita Federal if you are returning to Brazil and the AFIP if you are returning to Argentina, in the month you travel. We will not print an allowance here that could be out of date.

Is it better to go from the Brazilian or the Argentine side?

From Foz do Iguacu, because it is one border instead of two and 20 kilometres instead of 30 to 40. If you are already staying in Puerto Iguazu the trip still works, but leave earlier: four immigration controls in one day need a longer runway than two.

Can I take a rental car across the border?

Often not without specific paperwork that the rental company has to issue, and the rules differ by company and by country. Confirm it with your rental desk before the day of the trip, because the bridge is the worst possible place to discover the answer.

What is there to do in Ciudad del Este for a day?

The commercial district by the bridge, the shopping malls, the Itaipu dam on the edge of town and the Parana river front are the anchors of a full day. Our Ciudad del Este guide covers each of them, and the advice that matters is to pick one or two rather than sprint between all four.

Is the transfer price per person or per vehicle?

Per vehicle. The USD 347 from Asuncion to Ciudad del Este is the same whether one, two or three of you travel in the sedan, which is exactly what makes a private transfer competitive for a group travelling together. A 30 per cent deposit holds the date and the vehicle.

How far in advance should I book?

Forty-eight hours is enough in most cases. In high season and for groups, the more notice the better. The deposit can be paid by card, bank transfer, digital wallet or crypto, and the balance is due on the day of travel.
